WHITT'S END 7.12.13

Whether you're at the end of your rope or merely the end of your week, welcome to Whitt's End

*A week from today the Cowboys fly to Oxnard, California for training camp. Wonder if Josh Brent will be on that plane? He certainly shouldn't be. While out on bail awaiting his trial for intoxication manslaughter, Brent violated his probation by smoking pot and by having a monitoring device alert police that he had alcohol in his system. Even in the wake of his irresponsible actions leading to the death of a former teammate, guy just doesn't get it.

*It's come to this for the Mavs: Using new point guard Jose Calderon to help recruit potential center Samuel Dalembert. And sniffing around Greg Oden. I'll pause a second while you bury your head in your hands. ... In the wake of losing out on Dwight Howard, the Mavs are actually interested in Oden. Multiple knee surgeries have limited the No. 1 overall pick in '07 to 82 total games over two seasons. When healthy he's averaged 9.4 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.4 blocks. Tyson Chandler, we'll never forget.

*The Ticket on 104.1 FM is about to be a thing of the past. Cumulus has sold the frequency, and doubtful the new owners will simply keep 1310 AM's simulcast on its station. So here's my working theory: The Ticket is positioning itself for a move to 103.3 FM. Yep, ESPN. I know for a fact that Clear Channel attempted to buy 103.3 FM earlier this year. If The Ticket  hopes to buy it, and thereby move to a stronger, FM signal, it would have to dump its existing FM signal, 104.1. Again, it's only a hunch, but if The Ticket winds up on 103.3 FM and ESPN moves to 1310 AM, you heard it here first.

*Ross Wolf. Justin Grimm. Josh Lindblom. If you told me back in Spring Training that those pitchers would start a combined 23 games for the Rangers, I'd have predicted no way their record would be 53-39 near the All-Star break.

*Didn't watch Sharknado last night. But apparently I was the only one. SyFy's campy monster-disaster movie was the talk of the Twitterverse. It prompted 80 Tweets per second. Unless I'm wrong, it's a movie about sharks being hurled into a Los Angeles tornado. Serious.

   *Hot.

   *Not.

  1. Baltimore Papa Johns offer also requires them to WIN.

Puig is fun to watch. Baseball Karma will get him at some point. It gets EVERYBODY.

The Romo 4Q number don't mean shite when you are already 21 down or whatever. Garbage time for stats if you don't turn them into W's.

Saw two minutes of Sharnado at the point where they threw the bomb into the Nado from the helicopter. So cheesy.

Clooney just proved the old adage: No matter how hot they are, some guy out there is tired of F'n them.

  2. I'm not sure how much of an improvement moving to 103.3 would be for the Ticket. I'd call it a really dumb move if analog tuning wasn't a thing of the past. Still, I'm not a radio expert, but I doubt they could get much stronger a signal or range what with that frequency being wedged between that powers of 102.9 and 103.7. ESPN's always been difficult to pick up in some ares. Geez, I wish the Rangers were still on 1080.

  3. Mark Cuban has to have some hindsight on Tyson Chandler and Steve Nash you would think.

    1. Everyone acts like Tyson Chandler was always amazing, but people forget how improbable that title run was and that none of us saw it coming. The Mavs got Chandler by dealing Dampier, so nobody really wanted him when we got him. Chandler at that time was considered injury prone and inconsistent before coming to the Mavs. Real easy to second guess it all now, but the Mavs really thought they were landing a big free agent and if Cuban didn't screw-up the Deron Williams meeting they may have gotten one.

I agree on Nash, that was a beyond foolish move by Cuban even if he will never admit it.

    2. Everyone forgets that the prevailing opinion at the time was that Phoenix grossly overpaid for Nash. His back was bad and he'd looked inadequate during that postseason compared to other elite point guards. He happened to move to a system that was tailor made to fit his gifts, not to mention the rule changes that offseason that banned hand-checking, making his job a lot easier. It's not that Cuban made a mistake letting Nash go. His mistake was using that money on Dampier.

  4. I understand the Ticket wanting a better signal, it's been long overdue, but why would ESPN move to 1310 and their crappy signal?

  6. It's bon appétit, by the way. I'll embrace my RAGE, but don't tell me to embrace other things, and not to be scared. I embrace the things I choose to--and for my own reasons--thank you very much. Stay Hard, Keep Jammin', and We'll See Ya, RW.

P.S. How 'bout a story on the local cricketers? They throw down quite an amazing scene. Specially in Irving.

  7. Mavs just signed Monta Ellis, 3 years incentives could push it to $30 million.

    1. Calderon, Monta, Trix, Dirk, and Center X. Not a bad starting 5. Vince, Devin, Brendan off the bench. They should compete for the 4-6 seed.

  8. Damn you are making it hard for the old timer nut kickers to get ya. Been really solid sir.
I dont see why they would want 103.3 unless they simulcast and keep 1310. 1310 is so iconic to the station. Im sure some major station has moved the dial before but I cant name one as big as the ticket that icludes the 1310 call # in everything it advertises and does. SPORTSRADIO 103.3 THE Ticket just doesnt sound right

    1. KDGE (The Edge) moved from 94.5 to 102.1. It's ratings are probably better today then before it moved.

  9. So the Mavs signed Monte Ellis and Corey Brewer. The also signed Calderon, the kid from Isreal, Devin Harris and drafted Larkin. The Mavs now have 6 guards for 13 roster spots. Add Dirk and now you have 7. Cuban has either lost his mind thinking he's lining up against Plano Senior High for 82 games OR he's lining something up for a trade for Rondo. Since the trade rules are you have to be within 20% of the total money moving from team to team one would think he's not that far off his rocker is he? This gets crazier by the day!

Also, RW, can we switch the "Hot" and "Not" section to "Banana(s)" and "Peel(s)"?

More Denise Milani in the "Banana(s)" section and there wouldn't be a nut kicker within arms reach of the key board because their hands wouldn't be typing rather, both hands would be fully occupied.

For those of you closet porn watchers complaining about a previous video being a hot chick working out and winking at the camera at the end, get over yourselves. If you don't like it, no problem we won't tell anyone that you secret googled her in the first place to find out that she was a porn star and we certainly won't tell anyone that you found a more xxx rated version and you now have to explain to your wife why you are out of Kleenex.
