In the End, Kidd Kraddick's Heart Was Too Big

Kidd Kraddick is the guy we all listened to.
And, in the end, the victim we all cringe hearing about.
The wildly popular radio host - a vibrant 53-going-on-23 - was in New Orleans last weekend for a charity golf tournament benefiting his beloved Kidd's Kids. On Friday night, according to co-workers, he went to the casino, played Craps and later goofed off on Bourbon Street, pretending to be the slump-shouldered guy unable to have fun despite being in the middle of one of the world's most festive streets. On Saturday morning he rode in a limousine to nearby Timberlane Country Club in Gretna, and proceeded to the practice range for a warm-up.
Almost immediately he told folks he wasn't feeling well. Nauseous. Headache. Sweating profusely. Just feeling crappy. After hitting one last good shot - he always had to end on a high - he got in his cart and drove back to the limo to hydrate and cool off and ...
He was dead 15 minutes later.
Kraddick, a nationally syndicated host and Dallas/Fort Worth radio icon alongside Ron Chapman, Tom Joyner, Terry Dorsey and Norm Hitzges, apparently died of a sudden and massive heart attack, the result of an enlarged heart and cardiac disease. Yep, he literally dropped dead.
"We're beyond devastated," said long-time Kidd Kraddick in the Morning sidekick Kellie Rasberry on a surreal show this morning on 106.1 KISS FM. "But there's comfort in knowing he didn't suffer."
Added co-host Big Al Mack, "The doctors said he didn't feel any pain."
The guy with one of the biggest hearts in the Metroplex dies of an enlarged heart? In other words, shit happens.
While you contemplate whether dying of a heart attack is "better" than battling a deadly disease for years, the bouquets of social-media flowers for Kraddick continue to pour in. His energy, his compassion and his show truly made him a personality that transcended radio.

  1. The events you describe leading to Kidd's passing took place on Friday and Saturday, not Saturday and Sunday.

  2. Notice you retro changed your Saturday post and added heart attack as possible cause so you wouldn't look wrong. Not very professional.

    1. Richie was the first I read to report a brain aneurysm. Today the autopsy shows enlarged heart and cardiac arrest. I'm a fan of Richie's but I'm starting to get the vibe that he feels that being the first to report is better that being accurate. Those are 2 totally different causes of death.

RW - What is your take? Why jump the gun like that?

    2. I saw retweets before I saw anything from RW that stated it was an aneurysm.

    3. My beef is that the Saturday post was changed to CYA. Just post in this story you had it wrong on Saturday.

    4. It's really very simple, if you dont like it dont read it. Or start your own blog and write how you see fit. Otherwise, quit whining about it!

    5. Jeff, this isn't some troll comment. I'm reading because I do like the content, but if I see a problem with journalistic integrity I call it out as I would with anyone's content I call it out. Your saying your ok with Richie retro changing an earlier post without mention of the change to cover his ass? That would be very sheepish of you if true.

    6. As I wrote at the time, "Details aren't yet confirmed ..."

    7. Now, Richie, you are smart enough to know you are sidestepping around my original point. The Saturday post did not originally contain "or heart attack". It appears you changed that recently so as to appear to not be completely off base. I'm being reasonable here...no?

  3. Richie, I love your writing. Very nicely done. Lost a great humanitarian!

  4. The best you can do is to attempt to be 1/10th as noble as Kraddick. Live to the fullest. Help others. And, as much as possible, do what you want with whom you love.
In that sense, Kidd Kraddick ended on the ultimate high.

Keep looking up, 'cuz that's where it all is.

  6. Looks like RW's race to be first has bite him again. Of course he won't comment on his error because he does no wrong. if he would only take his own advise and try to be 1/10 as noble as Kidd Kraddick was.

  7. This has gotten ridiculous. A guy dies, and all you people can do is belittle RW. Okay, so he got the specifics of the story wrong (so did about 400 other people). Guess what, Kidd is dead and the physical frailty that caused his death doesn't really matter. Some of you people are complete assholes. God, what pathetic lives you lead!

  10. I've lived in Dallas since I was six and my family moved me here in 1970. I remember listening to Kidd late night while doing homework attending UTA. I mourn his death as much as anyone. My point is one of journalistic integrity that was crossed by Richie. He could have kept his post as it is regarding heart problem without even mentioning his earlier post. The *fact* is he changed his earlier post to include this possibility when he originally did not and that is a huge breach of trust. This isn't a "gd detail"--this is a insight into a defect that is discouraging.

  11. Um yeah...please see gerald's comment...
