THE TOP 10 WILDEST WINS IN DALLAS COWBOYS' HISTORY

Three opponents' touchdowns nullified by penalty or replay.
   A missed 39-yard field goal.
A game-losing touchdown transformed into a game-winning touchback via the opposing quarterback's fumble inches from the goal line.
And, of course, the NFL's first ever 1st-'n-10 decided by a 3x5.
You can root for a sports team an entire season - a decade? even a lifetime? - and never benefit from all of the above. But on an unprecedented, unforgettable night Oakland, the Cowboys were gift-wrapped all of them in one of the wildest wins in franchise history.

   10. Cowboys 34, at Rams 31 (9.18.14) - You know you've had a frenetic ride when the largest comeback in franchise history barely makes the list. Dallas trails in St. Louis, 21-0, before Bruce Carter's interception return for a touchdown with 5:58 remaining seals the deal.

   9. Cowboys 31, at Redskins 30 (9.15.83) - Trailing 23-3 at halftime, Danny White rallies Dallas to an electrifying season-opening win at old RFK Stadium behind three second-half touchdown passes, two to Tony Hill and the game-winner to Doug Cosbie with 1:49 remaining.

   8. at Cowboys 35, Redskins 34 (12.17.79) - Down 17-0 early and 34-21 late, the Cowboys and Roger Staubach stage a rally that gives them the NFC East title and knocks their bitter rivals out of the playoffs. Ignited by a critical third-down tackle of John Riggins by Larry Cole, Staubach throws two touchdowns in the final 2:20 and completes the comeback with a score to Hill with :39 remaining.

   7. at Cowboys 24, Redskins 23 (11.29.74) - All but eliminated from the playoffs, the Cowboys trail 16-3 and are suddenly without an injured Staubach on a bleak Thanksgiving at Texas Stadium. Enter Abilene Christian rookie Clint Longley, making his first regular-season appearance in an NFL game. Down six points with :28 remaining, he finds an inexplicably wide-open Drew Pearson for a 50-yard touchdown that literally nobody saw coming.

   6. at Cowboys 27, Giants 26 (9.13.15) - Can't get much more desperate than trailing by three, out of timeouts and your opponent at your 1-yard line with 1:43 remaining. The Giants deliver a huge assist by stopping the clock with a third-down pass, and settling for a field goal and a 26-20 lead. But the Cowboys - without a timeout or spike or injured Dez Bryant - drive 72 yards in six plays and win when Tony Romo (after corralling a bad, bouncing shotgun snap) finds Jason Witten at the goal line with :07. It's the latest game-winning touchdown pass in franchise history.

   5. Cowboys 30, at 49ers 28 (12.23.72) - This playoff game at Candlestick Park is the unveiling of Captain America. The Cowboys trail 28-13 after three quarters (it could be worse had San Francisco not missed two field goals inside of 40 yards), prompting head coach Tom Landry to replace veteran quarterback Craig Morton with Staubach. He responds with two late touchdown passes in a span of :43, sandwiched around an onside-kick recovered by Mel Renfro. Staubach sets up the final score with a 21-yard scramble and hits Ron Sellers with a 10-yard post pass for the unlikely game winner.

   4. Cowboys 25, at Bills 24 (10.8.07) - The first MNF game in Buffalo in 13 years is impossibly unscripted. The Cowboys trail 24-13 entering the 4th quarter because of six Romo turnovers (1 fumble and 5 interceptions, 2 returned for touchdowns). Romo hits Patrick Crayton for a short touchdown, but Terrell Owens is stripped of a 2-point conversion pass to leave Dallas trailing 24-22 with :20 remaining. After a carom off of Sam Hurd, Cowboys’ tight end Tony Curtis then recovers the onside kick. Rookie Nick Folk boots a 53-yard field goal at the gun for a dramatic win, only to have Buffalo call the last-millisecond timeout. But on the second attempt, Folk is good again. Nine points in :20 will get any heartbeat racing.

   3. at Cowboys 21, Eagles 20 (9.15.97) - Inarguably the luckiest win in team history, Dallas survives when Philadelphia holder Tom Hutton bobbles the snap and aborts what would have been Chris Boniol's chip-shot, game-winning field from the 12-yard line with :04 remaining.

   2. Cowboys 20, at Raiders 17 (12.17.17) - It isn't just the three Raiders' negated touchdowns and the fake punt and the dropped interception by Anthony Brown and the 55-yard interference penalty and the dramatic, folded-card first down. The thing that makes Sunday night so dazzling is that even after all those wacky plays the Cowboys need Derek Carr to fumble into - and out of - the end zone to survive.

   1. Cowboys 17, at Vikings 14 (12.28.75) - Staubach's "Hail Mary" 50-yard touchdown pass to Pearson with :24 remaining won the game, but it was only possible after an improbable series of events in the epic playoff game. Leading, 14-10, with 2:00 remaining the Vikings seemed destined to run out the clock at midfield but instead attempt a pass on 3rd-and-2 and fail when Charlie Waters sacks Fran Tarkenton. The ensuing punt leaves Dallas at its 15 with 1:51 remaining. At that point, Pearson had not caught a pass in the game. On a 4th-and-16, Pearson leaps and catches Staubach's 25-yard pass on the sideline, his feet clearly landing out of bounds. However, in 1975 there is a "force out" rule in play, which gives an automatic reception to any receiver who is shoved out of bounds while his feet are in the air. In today's NFL, the Hail Mary would have never even had a chance to be thrown. Two plays later Pearson catches history. He punctuates the touchdown by throwing the ball over the scoreboard, out of the stadium and into the parking lot. The ball - one of the most iconic plays in NFL history - has never been accounted for.

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End:

*The Cowboys aren't necessarily successful, but no denying they are wildly entertaining. And, most of all, nauseating. No team in the NFL loses as dramatically as the Cowboys. No coach authors as many heart-breaking, kick-to-the-crotch defeats as Jason Garrett. And, yes, I do have the facts to back that up. In Garrett's 54 games as head coach, 14 have been White-Knuckler losses. Think about that. 25 percent of the time you've watched a Cowboys' game since mid-2010 it's ended in a heart-breaking loss. 20 Years Later, Cowboys' Same Greedy Strategy Produces Drastically Different Results

One of the most memorable plays in Dallas Cowboys' history was born of illogical desperation and founded upon a distrust of the defense.
No, not Sunday's interception by Tony Romo in which he changed a run into a pass and then transformed a sack into a pick. I'm talking about the play that ignited their 1990s dynasty.
On January 17, 1993 the Cowboys were clinging to a 24-20 lead on the 49ers in the NFC Championship Game in the slop of Candlestick Park ...

WHITT'S END: 12.2.13

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End:

*Just when the Cowboys trusted Lance Dunbar and just when the change-up back added a much-needed dimension to Dallas' offense - poof - he's gone. Here, then not. Like one of David Blaine's coins. Hope you enjoyed that refreshing burst on Thanksgiving, because Dunbar is Done-bar, out for the season with a torn knee ligament. Joseph Randle and Phillip Tanner will attempt to fill Dunbar's role. But make no mistake, this is a priority injury to a backup player. In much better news, sounds like Sean Lee will return for next Monday night's game against the Bears.

*Alabama lost on the road to its rival on a day when it missed 4 field goals and had one returned 109 yards for the game-deciding touchdown. On a neutral field I'd take 'Bama over Auburn 9 out of 10 times. And therein lies the beauty of college football. Raise your hand if you picked Auburn and Missouri to play in the SEC Championship Game. Nobody? That's what I thought. Last year the Tigers-x-2 were 2-14 in conference play.

*Any game that ends with Nick Saban unhappy is a good game.

*After watching Ohio State slip past a mediocre Michigan team on the game's final play, I'm not convinced of the Buckeyes. Their schedule strength is 61st, the price for scheduling San Diego State and Florida A&M at home. Ohio State will be tested big time in the Big 10 Championship Game against a Michigan State team that won all 8 of its conference games by 10+ points. If the Buckeyes reach the BCS title game against Florida State, they'll be double-digit underdogs.

*We all used the replacement refs as a punch line and just couldn't wait for the "real refs." Remember when you actually applauded their return? But, seriously, NFL officials are having a ridiculously horrible season. With memories of the inexplicable non-call in the end zone of Patriots-Panthers still fresh, last night Jeff Triplette's crew botched the end of Redskins-Giants. With Triplette signaling first down and the line judge clearly motioning for the chains to be moved, oops, it was actually still third down. And then instead of 2nd-and-10, um, it was 4th-and-1. "The stakes were moved incorrectly," Triplette said, as if they magically, erroneously moved themselves. I'm not saying it directly cost the Redskins the game, but I've never seen a more fundamental, egregious error at more pivotal time in an NFL game. It certainly changed Washington's play-calling. For years I've called for the banishment of football's archaic "chains." And these days I'd love to see human referees leave the sport with them.

*If you missed my Top 10 Whitty Comments on Cowboys-Raiders over the weekend, consider them leftovers over in the NBC 5 Blue Star Blog fridge.

*While on the couch burping turkey and sipping spirits with the family over Thanksgiving several topics arose. Including, "Would you rather be fired or dumped?" Consensus: Fired. Good jobs are much easier to come by than good spouses. Amen to that.

WHITT'S END: 11.26.13

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End:

*If nothing else, your Cowboys are the best team in ... America Texas. The Texans began the season 2-0 and are now 2-9. As for the best college team in the state? Still Baylor. Hey, that means our top two teams have each suffered demoralizing road losses of 49-17 this month. Cowboys to the Saints. Bears to Oklahoma State. Woe is football.

*Mavs aren't quite there yet. Dominated last night on the boards and in quickness by the Denver Nuggets. First home loss of the season. Not a big deal. But their stubborn reliance upon Vince Carter is a big, bad deal. He was 3 of 13 Monday night, including 0 of 4 on 3-pointers. Every time he shoots a jumper, the Mavs' progress and future gets stunted a little more.

*As sports - and life - reminds us time and again, it can be a short, swift ride from penthouse to outhouse. Right, Robert Griffin III? Or vice-versa. Right, guy-who-won-the-lottery-and-almost-invested-it-all-with-Bernie-Madoff-but-decided-against-it-at-the-last-minute?

*From the Dept. of Life Ain't Fair: Derrick Rose is out for the season, again with a knee injury. His other knee. Tore the ACL in his left knee in 2012 and sat out the 2013 season. Now he tears a meniscus in his right knee, undergoes surgery and will miss the rest of 2014. He's one of my favorite players. The NBA is a better league with him in it. With two reconstructed knees, you have a sinking feeling he may never again be the player that won MVP in 2011.

*There was a time when putting up Christmas lights got me in a festive mood. Put on the holiday music and perhaps don a Santa hat and merrily string lights. But these days I've got such a refined system it only takes an hour. Did it Saturday in the cold and rain - sans music - and, sadly, it just felt like a routine chore more than a scene-setting spirit-lifter. Man, getting old sucks.

*The Reverend Billy Graham is one of the most righteous, holy, good people on this planet. He's been spreading the gospel for 70 years. But, at 95, the evangelist's health is finally fading. Spent two days in a North Carolina hospital last week with respiratory ailments. If I'm God, I miraculously heal Graham and restore his health to a man aged 25. Allow him to live to be 145, if not older. Then non-believers and/or fence-straddlers would say "Whoa, that's badass! I'm gonna live my life more like him!" Perhaps I'm paraphrasing, but you get the point. Graham's the perfect role model, but his chore of turning hearts, minds and souls toward God becomes a tad more difficult if he's not alive.

WHITT'S END: 11.22.13

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End:

*Jerry Jones announcing that head coach Jason Garrett will be back in 2014 should surprise no one. Nor should anyone be shocked if he changes his mind. If you don't think the headline-grabbing pronouncement was a planned counter-punch to the Rangers' signing of Prince Fielder, then you don't know Jerry Jones. But before you start making reservations to meet Garrett in Oxnard next summer, just remember that once upon a time - known as 2010 - Jerry claimed that Wade Phillips' job was safe because "I've never changed coaches in the middle of a season, and I never will change coaches in the middle of a season." Two weeks later Phillips was fired. Despite Jerry's ploy on Thursday, Garrett's job should be - and is - on the line in this season's final six weeks.

*How good has Monta Ellis been for the Mavericks? He's already the best free-agent signing in the Mark Cuban era. In the last three seasons no Mav had a game of at least 32 points and 8 assists. He's done it twice in this season's first 12 games. Ellis and Dirk Nowitzki, by the way, are the NBA's third most prolific duo. I'll give you the details over at NBC 5's Sports Blog.

*Using next year's "Football Four" college football playoff and this year's teams, we'd be looking at semifinals of Baylor-Alabama in the Rose Bowl and Florida State-Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl, with the winners meeting at AT&T Stadium. Deliciously fake.

*During a break from watching Sybil emcee an award-winning "What's In Your Pocket?" scavenger hunt at Blue Martini last night, I sneaked a peek at Stars-Rangers. As you know I don't watch a lot of hockey. And I was reminded why. In a 60-minute game there were 63 face-offs. Imagine if there were that many jump-balls in an NBA game.

*Some self-anointed experts - like somebody at NFL.com named Adam Schein - predicted a Texans-Falcons Super Bowl this season. Those teams are a combined 4-17. My picks: Broncos-Niners. Still doable.

*As usual the weatherfolks over-exaggerated this "Arctic Blast!" Expecting to go outside in sub-freezing temps and dig the car out from under a foot of wintry mix, instead I awoke in McKinney to zero precipitation, cloudy and 38 degrees.

*Lots of right-wingers trying to compare Obamacare to Hurricane Katrina as an "American tragedy." Katrina - and a certain President's slow response to it - killed 1,800 people and did $80 billion worth of damage. Obamacare is good intentions plagued by a bad website. Please stop.
