WHITT'S END: 12.2.13

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End:

*Just when the Cowboys trusted Lance Dunbar and just when the change-up back added a much-needed dimension to Dallas' offense - poof - he's gone. Here, then not. Like one of David Blaine's coins. Hope you enjoyed that refreshing burst on Thanksgiving, because Dunbar is Done-bar, out for the season with a torn knee ligament. Joseph Randle and Phillip Tanner will attempt to fill Dunbar's role. But make no mistake, this is a priority injury to a backup player. In much better news, sounds like Sean Lee will return for next Monday night's game against the Bears.

*Alabama lost on the road to its rival on a day when it missed 4 field goals and had one returned 109 yards for the game-deciding touchdown. On a neutral field I'd take 'Bama over Auburn 9 out of 10 times. And therein lies the beauty of college football. Raise your hand if you picked Auburn and Missouri to play in the SEC Championship Game. Nobody? That's what I thought. Last year the Tigers-x-2 were 2-14 in conference play.

*Any game that ends with Nick Saban unhappy is a good game.

*After watching Ohio State slip past a mediocre Michigan team on the game's final play, I'm not convinced of the Buckeyes. Their schedule strength is 61st, the price for scheduling San Diego State and Florida A&M at home. Ohio State will be tested big time in the Big 10 Championship Game against a Michigan State team that won all 8 of its conference games by 10+ points. If the Buckeyes reach the BCS title game against Florida State, they'll be double-digit underdogs.

*We all used the replacement refs as a punch line and just couldn't wait for the "real refs." Remember when you actually applauded their return? But, seriously, NFL officials are having a ridiculously horrible season. With memories of the inexplicable non-call in the end zone of Patriots-Panthers still fresh, last night Jeff Triplette's crew botched the end of Redskins-Giants. With Triplette signaling first down and the line judge clearly motioning for the chains to be moved, oops, it was actually still third down. And then instead of 2nd-and-10, um, it was 4th-and-1. "The stakes were moved incorrectly," Triplette said, as if they magically, erroneously moved themselves. I'm not saying it directly cost the Redskins the game, but I've never seen a more fundamental, egregious error at more pivotal time in an NFL game. It certainly changed Washington's play-calling. For years I've called for the banishment of football's archaic "chains." And these days I'd love to see human referees leave the sport with them.

*If you missed my Top 10 Whitty Comments on Cowboys-Raiders over the weekend, consider them leftovers over in the NBC 5 Blue Star Blog fridge.

*While on the couch burping turkey and sipping spirits with the family over Thanksgiving several topics arose. Including, "Would you rather be fired or dumped?" Consensus: Fired. Good jobs are much easier to come by than good spouses. Amen to that.

*In honor of Cyber Monday, DFWSportatorium will be free all day! Next week? We'll see.

WHITT'S END: 10.25.13

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End:

*Last time the Cowboys rode into Detroit Tony Romo was at the peak of his career. Clutch drive to beat the Lions. Last-second touchdown pass to Jason Witten. On his way to 4,200 yards and the Pro Bowl, and his team was a sparkling 12-1. The head coach on the other sideline that day in December 2007 will be on the Cowboys' bench Sunday at Ford Field: Rod Marinelli.

*So far in the World Series it's been defense. Bad defense. The simple art of catching and throwing. The Cardinals kicked the ball around like the Bad News Bears in Game 1 and in last night's Game 2 the Red Sox made two errors in the crucial 7th inning in throwing away a lead. So far it's anything but Fall Classic.

*To help get Pizza Buzz off the ground Sybil and I spent yesterday afternoon hand-delivering fliers in surrounding neighborhoods. Compared to the chaotic convergence of contractors and permits and inspectors and vendors and deliveries and hiring and training and writing checks and ... it was literally a walk in the park. Sunshine. iPod. No phones. My main discovery after trekking around northeast Fort Worth for two hours? Way more folks than I thought still have the newspaper delivered. I'd say one of every three houses had a Fort Worth Star-Telegram in the driveway.

*Is there any doubt the worst team in the NFL resides in Florida? Only 200 miles apart are the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They are a combined 0-14 by an average score of 28-13. Bad as the Bucs looked in losing to Carolina last night, I'd take them by a touchdown over the Jags.

*There is " ... and justice for all." Sometimes. Cardan Spencer, the Dallas cop who shot the mentally ill man in a horrible scene caught on home surveillance video 10 days ago, has been fired. And also charged with aggravated assault. Good. Spencer's report said the victim, Bobby Bennett, took two steps forward and raised a knife in a threatening manner. The video, however, showed Spencer shooting a man who stood still with his arms at his side. The sickening thing about all this is the response from Dallas Police Association President Ron Pinkston, who says "the investigation was pushed through for political and media reasons" and that "the Dallas Police Department lost a very good young police officer today." Bull. Shit. We have enough bad folks on the streets without having cops who will shoot innocent victims.

*Bases loaded. One out. Tie game. Bottom 9. You win the game you get $10 million cash. You lose the game you get an instant lethal injection. Who do you want at the plate? Hard to not hand the bat to David Ortiz isn't it?

WHITT'S END: 10.24.13

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End:

*Cowboys to play in London next season? Book it. Jerry Jones wants to win in England, and this is the best scenario possible: Playing a horrible team without giving up a "home" game on the schedule. Cheers. Once upon time - August, 1993 - the Cowboys played a pre-season game in Wembley Stadium. As beat writers at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Mike Fisher and I had a jolly ol' time. And, yes, I do believe the incredible dork on the right is wearing a New Order concert T-shirt.

*You can't go out, kick the ball around, commit three errors, let an infield pop-up go untouched and expect to win a game a Cactus League game in March. Much less Game 1 of the World Series. There's no stopping the Boston Beards is there?

*If you don't believe me about Orlando Scandrick and Doug Free being the Cowboys' best defensive back and offensive lineman through seven weeks, go ask former NFL scout Bryan Broaddus. He'll tell you the same thing. @BryanBroaddus: “@CGio8: scandrick  seems to be one of the most underrated players in this team.  He's been rock solid .” Best of DBs thru 7 games. 6:32am · 23 Oct 13 · Twitter for iPhone. But knowing some of you guys y'all probably think you know more football than him as well. Right?

*David Smoak is a good man, a great cook and a radio lifer. Until 2009 he owned East Texas via his hub in Tyler. These days he's the man in Central Texas. As of last week his show based on 1660 AM in Waco is being simulcast on ESPN affiliates all the way from Round Rock and College Station to Cleburne and Fort Worth (on 1460 AM). Good for him.

*How far has Tim Tebow fallen? (And Vince Young, for that matter.) Instead of him, in the wake of Sam Bradford's season-ending injury the Rams called a 44-year-old grandfather who hasn't played football in three years. Yep, Brett Favre. And to think, I used to debate folks on here who tried to convince me that Tebow was a better quarterback than Tony Romo.

WHITT'S END: 10.15.13

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End

*I was on the field before Cowboys-Redskins talking to an NFL scout I've known for years and he was bemoaning the demise of DeMarcus Ware. Consecutive weeks without a sack against backup tackles were a concern. The stingers in the neck. The surgically-repaired shoulder. The lower back stiffening up. All worries about a 31-year-old. "I'm afraid we're seeing the inevitable decline," the scout said. "Sometimes, it just happens overnight." About four hours later Ware was on the sideline with a pulled thigh muscle that will prompt the first missed game of his Ring-of-Honor career Sunday in Philly. He could be out a month. He might never be the same again.

*Baseball already has its signature game of the playoffs with the Red Sox' rally over the Tigers behind David Ortiz' Grand Slam in Game 2 of the ALCS. But, other than that, zzzzz. I watched both the ALCS and NLCS games last Saturday and what'd I get? 18 innings. 105 outs. 2 runs. Two. All spliced together by countless slow-motion replays of swings of misses and endless shots of a crowd on the edge of its seat awaiting ... something. Anything. Late in those games we waited a good 30 - and at times 45 - seconds between pitches. And add another game last night in which a team didn't score. In the five LCS games, three times the losing team has been shut out and in all but one the winning team scored three runs or less. Average score: 2.8-1.4. Don't look now, but this postseason baseball has deteriorated into soccer.

*Remember back when Dez Bryant made us cringe on kick returns with his careless ball security and mental lapses? Yeah, well Dwyane Harris has fixed all that. I detail the two-time NFC Special Teams Player of the Week over at NBC 5's Blue Star Blog.

*Don't see the movie, Prisoners. Unless, that is, you want to torture yourself with the most confusing, nonsensical plot involving a maze since The Shining. Jake Gyllenhaal is a bumbling detective that misses obvious clues and never ever calls for uniformed backup. If you dare try it, please tell me why the little girl in the hospital claims Hugh Jackman was there when she had tape put on her mouth. And if you remember The Shining, please tell me why Jack Nicholson supposedly seeing himself in old photos at the hotel bar makes him want to kill everyone in sight.

*I don't agree with everything about this New York Post column penned by Phil Mushnick, but it is thought-provoking. As in, yeah, it's kinda weird how we just mindlessly knee-jerk into "thoughts and prayers" mode for Adrian Peterson, even though the Vikings' running back never even took the time to meet his 2-year-old son that was killed at the hands of another man last weekend.

WHITT'S END: 9.27.13

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End

*Rangers' manager Ron Washington is taking a lot of heat for another September swoon, but he gets credit for picking the right pinch-hitter Thursday night. Needing a runner to start a rally in a must-win game to cling to hope in the AL Wild Card, Wash inserted Jurickson Profar over Lance Berkman. It was the right call, and probably also an easy one. Berkman hasn't had a hit since July 3. And Profar rewarded his manager with a dramatic homer. Profar, by the way, is only the second player in baseball history with a pinch-hit, walk-off home run before turning 21. The other? Jimmie Foxx back in 19 and 28. Needing to make up one game with three to play, the Rangers are embarking on a fun weekend.

*The rarest of all jerseys in the NFL are the Cowboys' blue roadies. They'll wear them Sunday in San Diego for the only time this year. They've worn them only seven times in the past five seasons. Probably a good thing, because in their 54-year history the Cowboys have only one - that's one, singular - playoff win in blue. Is there really a jinx? I detail the myth over at NBC 5's Blue Star Blog.

*Took a lot of grief in comments Thursday for being happy about $2.99 gas in Fort Worth and saying that the ominous predictions of President Obama's incompetency pushing gas to $5 were simply wrong. I got called a "flaming liberal" and warned that - as a small business owner starting up Pizza Buzz - Obamacare was going to doom me and my dream. Fine, y'all be Old Man Potter in It's A Wonderful Life. I'm content as George Bailey. If I'm ever lucky enough to have 50+ employees I'll gladly provide health insurance for my peeps. To me that would be a privilege, not a burden. Because when I sit in a rocking chair on the porch of my golden years, I'm going to reflect not on how many dollars I saved but rather how many lives I touched. You go ahead and protect your money. That's your right and I'll never criticize you for it. But me? I'll continue to donate my time and assets to Make-A-Wish and DFWRescueMe and the fight against Alzheimer's. In fact, I'm walking Saturday morning in Allen at Celebration Park for my good buddy Trey Lee, whose father is fighting the horrible disease. See you - or at least your money - there?

*In a game we thought we were destined to remember for the epic four-error inning, the RangErs instead erased the mistakes with a fourth consecutive walk-off  homer against the Angels and Josh Hamilton's beard. Going back to late July, that's back-to-back-to-back-to-back walk-off homers at home for the Rangers over Anaheim. Gotta be some kind of record. I'd look it up, but it's gorgeous outside today and it's been a long week. Let me know what you find out.

*Not trying to mist on your parade plans, but the Cowboys' two wins are against teams with a combined record of 1-6. And if you watched Frank Gore shred the Rams' defense for 153 yards last night you're a little less impressed by DeMarco Murray's 175 from last Sunday. On the other hand, Dallas' only loss is by one point, on the road, to an undefeated team. So maybe your glass is more than half-full?

*Yeah, I get it. Mariano Rivera is baseball's all-time saves leader and a class guy. His retirement is noteworthy, but to me - a life-long Yankees' hater - not the least bit sad. I'll be about as "sad" when Tim Duncan retires. But, seriously now, has any player in the history of baseball had a more out-of-whack send-off? For a player who was on the field only a half-inning per game and never appeared on more than three consecutive days, didn't his farewell go a tad overboard? And you get the feeling we'll get more of it over the weekend when New York travels to Houston.

Week 2/ 9.5.13: You Betcha

I'm starting with a mythical bankroll of $10,000, courtesy of my friends at Bodog sports online casino. First of all, because their site is easy to navigate. More importantly, because they're based in Costa Rica and have had minimal success tracking me down in the past.
I'll analyze games/wagers each weekend and make a pick every Thursday. With any luck, by Christmas it'll be new iPhone 6s for everyone!

   Well, that $ucked.
TCU - plus my five points - was poised to win, or at least cover last Saturday night at AT&T Stadium. Trailing only 30-27 the Horned Frogs had momentum late in the fourth quarter and ... LSU 75-yard kickoff return.
   Just like that. Poof.
Two options in the wake of a gut-wrenching loss. 1. Quit while I'm behind; 2. Win it all back.
I think the 49ers are going to handle the Packers Sunday in Candlestick. Green Bay isn't nearly the team it was last January. And San Francisco is better. Final score of that meeting in the NFC Playoffs: 45-31.
While Colin Kaepernick has added Anquan Boldin to his stable of weapons, the Packers have offensive trouble. Receiver Greg Jennings bolted for the Vikings in free agency and they suffered season-ending injuries to starting left tackle Bryan Bulaga and running back DuJuan Harris. So Aaron Rodgers is going against one of the NFL's best defense with a rookie left tackle (David Bakhtiari) and a rookie running back (Eddie Lacy).
The Packers' first-team offense didn't score a touchdown in the preseason.
Good luck. 49ers win by 10+ points.
STARTING BANKROLL: $10,000.
CURRENT BANKROLL: $8,900.
SEASON RECORD: 0-1.
LAST WEEK: 0-1.
THIS WEEK: 49ers minus-4.5 over Packers, $1,500.
