20 Years Later, Cowboys' Same Greedy Strategy Produces Drastically Different Results

One of the most memorable plays in Dallas Cowboys' history was born of illogical desperation and founded upon a distrust of the defense.
No, not Sunday's interception by Tony Romo in which he changed a run into a pass and then transformed a sack into a pick. I'm talking about the play that ignited their 1990s dynasty.
On January 17, 1993 the Cowboys were clinging to a 24-20 lead on the 49ers in the NFC Championship Game in the slop of Candlestick Park ...

WHITT'S END: 12.5.13

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End:

*With Lance Dunbar out for the season, it's time for DeMarco Murray to play like an elite running back. But, wait, he already is. While you were bemoaning and degrading Murray as an oft-injured underachiever, look what he went out and did. He leads the NFL in yards-per-carry at 4.9 and is on pace for 1,115 yards, which would be the best season by a Cowboys' running back since Emmitt Smith in 2000. For the Cowboys to survive December, Murray needs to pull the sleigh. And there's evidence right under our cold noses that's he fully prepared to do just that.

*I'm thoroughly entertained by - and not at all surprised by - the comments criticizing my move to monetizing this here corner of the blogosphere. One of the biggest reasons for the decision? ...

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End

*Cowboys 31, Redskins 16: My Top 10 Whitty Comments are over at NBC 5's Blue Star Blog.

*Like most of you guys, I was happily floored by Texas'  performance Saturday in the Cotton Bowl. Their 36-20 dismantling of previously unbeaten OU is a shocking season-saver and allows Mack Brown to tell his critics to (at least for one more week) put a sock in it. But the end was a tad embarrassing. The Gatorade dump on the head coach, for an October win? I know OU is the rival now and Texas' seniors finally beat the Sooners, but not long ago the 'Horns raised National Championship banners.

*Good for Boston. With the Marathon bombing and Aaron Hernandez and the (relatively unimportant) break-up of the Celtics, it's been a rough year in Beantown. But Sunday was one for the ages. Tom Brady by day; David Ortiz by night. Magical. Closest thing I can remember for the Metroplex is Oct. 23, 2011. On that Sunday we were treated to a doubleheader of amazing individual performances by 20-somethings. In the afternoon DeMarco Murray rushed for a Cowboys'-record 253 yards in a win over the Rams, and at night - just across the street - Derek Holland threw 8 1/3 innings of two-hit baseball as the Rangers shut out the Cardinals in Game 4 of the World Series.

*Love me some Chris Arnold. Great guy, and a better teammate. In fact, I helped him get his gig at 105.3 The Fan. But there's no defending his blatant, cut-and-paste plagiarism of a Tony Romo article that he claimed as his own "next level analysis" piece over at CBSDFW.com. Knowing that the CBS suits in New York have already fired a Houston station employee this year for merely asking whether an Oklahoma City Thunder cheerleader was fat, I fear for Chris' job. He wasn't part of GBag Nation's Texas-OU preview show Saturday morning and I'm told that the ultimate decision will be made by corporate, not The Fan. You guys know how I feel about credit attribution, and Chris - like the rest of of us - learned in high school that stealing someone else's work is a no-no. I will offer this as Chris' only defense: He's not a writer. The Fan has recently mandated - for no more pay, I might add - that its on-air hosts contribute to its web site in the form of blogs. But that's like gathering all your plumbers together on the job site and decrying that they also need to run the electrical wiring. This just in: Not everyone can write. Playing people out of position is a dangerous strategy, and it's backfired on The Fan. Granted, it's not a strong defense for Chris. But looks like it's his only defense.

WHITT'S END: 9.27.13

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End

*Rangers' manager Ron Washington is taking a lot of heat for another September swoon, but he gets credit for picking the right pinch-hitter Thursday night. Needing a runner to start a rally in a must-win game to cling to hope in the AL Wild Card, Wash inserted Jurickson Profar over Lance Berkman. It was the right call, and probably also an easy one. Berkman hasn't had a hit since July 3. And Profar rewarded his manager with a dramatic homer. Profar, by the way, is only the second player in baseball history with a pinch-hit, walk-off home run before turning 21. The other? Jimmie Foxx back in 19 and 28. Needing to make up one game with three to play, the Rangers are embarking on a fun weekend.

*The rarest of all jerseys in the NFL are the Cowboys' blue roadies. They'll wear them Sunday in San Diego for the only time this year. They've worn them only seven times in the past five seasons. Probably a good thing, because in their 54-year history the Cowboys have only one - that's one, singular - playoff win in blue. Is there really a jinx? I detail the myth over at NBC 5's Blue Star Blog.

*Took a lot of grief in comments Thursday for being happy about $2.99 gas in Fort Worth and saying that the ominous predictions of President Obama's incompetency pushing gas to $5 were simply wrong. I got called a "flaming liberal" and warned that - as a small business owner starting up Pizza Buzz - Obamacare was going to doom me and my dream. Fine, y'all be Old Man Potter in It's A Wonderful Life. I'm content as George Bailey. If I'm ever lucky enough to have 50+ employees I'll gladly provide health insurance for my peeps. To me that would be a privilege, not a burden. Because when I sit in a rocking chair on the porch of my golden years, I'm going to reflect not on how many dollars I saved but rather how many lives I touched. You go ahead and protect your money. That's your right and I'll never criticize you for it. But me? I'll continue to donate my time and assets to Make-A-Wish and DFWRescueMe and the fight against Alzheimer's. In fact, I'm walking Saturday morning in Allen at Celebration Park for my good buddy Trey Lee, whose father is fighting the horrible disease. See you - or at least your money - there?

*In a game we thought we were destined to remember for the epic four-error inning, the RangErs instead erased the mistakes with a fourth consecutive walk-off  homer against the Angels and Josh Hamilton's beard. Going back to late July, that's back-to-back-to-back-to-back walk-off homers at home for the Rangers over Anaheim. Gotta be some kind of record. I'd look it up, but it's gorgeous outside today and it's been a long week. Let me know what you find out.

*Not trying to mist on your parade plans, but the Cowboys' two wins are against teams with a combined record of 1-6. And if you watched Frank Gore shred the Rams' defense for 153 yards last night you're a little less impressed by DeMarco Murray's 175 from last Sunday. On the other hand, Dallas' only loss is by one point, on the road, to an undefeated team. So maybe your glass is more than half-full?

*Yeah, I get it. Mariano Rivera is baseball's all-time saves leader and a class guy. His retirement is noteworthy, but to me - a life-long Yankees' hater - not the least bit sad. I'll be about as "sad" when Tim Duncan retires. But, seriously now, has any player in the history of baseball had a more out-of-whack send-off? For a player who was on the field only a half-inning per game and never appeared on more than three consecutive days, didn't his farewell go a tad overboard? And you get the feeling we'll get more of it over the weekend when New York travels to Houston.

*Cowboys 31, Rams 7: My Top 10 Whitty Observations over at NBC 5's Blue Star Blog, including a foggy memory of the last time the Cowboys played such a dominant first half of football. Hint: We were Christmas shopping. And a lot younger.

*EDIT: The more I hear the more this seems like Galloway is pulling the strings on his own departure. To which I say, good for him. I've written a couple times that it'd make sense for Cumulus to just buy out the contract of Randy Galloway and, sure enough, one way or another, the legendary media icon's days are numbered. It's actually Galloway's decision since his non-transferable contract stipulates him only working for ESPN, but regardless, his last day on the radio will be the day The Ticket officially takes over 103.3 FM ESPN. That could be as soon as Friday or as far out as a month from now, as the FCC has initially rejected The Ticket's selling of its 104.1 FM signal. Galloway's contract runs through Dec. 31, but he has zero intention of working for the Cumulus folks he's battled against for three decades. Though the station is upticking in the ratings, the expected cuts at ESPN are now beginning. Out as of last week - but also not official until the switch is approved - are program director Tom Lee, general manager Pete Dits and on-air talent like Kelly Webster and Landry Locker. Filling Galloway's big boots won't be easy, as he's been a print fixture in the Metroplex since 1966. I'm told names being kicked around to take his chair include The Ticket's Norm Hitzges, Channel 8's Dale Hansen and Channel 11's Steve Dennis. Also told that Galloway sidekick Matt Mosley's job is safe, awaiting a new partner. Not that Dennis - or anyone else - can come in and dent The Hardline's dynasty, but he's opinionated, educated and not afraid to ask a tough question nor shy away from offering a unique view. I worked alongside Galloway at the Star-Telegram, competed against him at 105.3 The Fan and played with him at various horse tracks around the country. Personally, I'll miss him.

*Last year it was Josh Hamilton's bat. This Fall it's Nelson Cruz's. For very different reasons, obviously, they both vanished at the wrong time. And the punchless Rangers are again authoring an epic collapse. On Aug. 23 the Rangers led the A's by 3.5 games. On Sept. 22 the A's clinched the AL West. How does a 12-game swing happen? The Rangers haven't won back-to-back games since Aug. 28, that's how.

*Between Breaking Bad and Dexter and Bears-Steelers and my late-night appearance on NBC 5's Big Game Sunday, managed to watch a little of The Emmys. Gotta admit, very entertaining. Neil Patrick Harris was a lively host. The Newsroom's Will MacAvoy beat out Walter White. And two women caught my eye: That one with the cavernous cleavage that I can never understand and who's on that show that I never watch. And the one from Homeland who always makes those painful faces and is flatter than Odessa.

*Monday tastes a little better with this sugar on top: For the first time ever, the Giants and Redskins are both 0-3. Bon appetit.

*Jason Garrett admits "We haven't run the ball well enough and we haven't ran the ball enough." DeMarco Murray suggests "It's something the coaches are going to have to talk about and discuss." Despite the change to Bill Callahan as play-caller and a supposed shift of emphasis to the running game, Tony Romo has thrown 91 passes through two games (4th-most in the NFL). There are 15 running backs and 1 quarterback with more rushing yards than your Cowboys. At what point does Murray shoulder some of the blame? I detail the problems over at NBC 5's Blue Star Blog.

*Sure, Rangers. Erupt for seven runs with spot-starter Alexi Ogando on the mound after giving ace Yu Darvish absolutely nada in consecutive 1-0 losses. Any win is a good win - especially when it snaps a seven-game losing streak and bolsters Wild Card hopes. But, seriously, don't you think Yu witnessed all those crooked numbers on the scoreboard and grumbled "What the what?!" under his breath? In Japanese. So, something like ... screw it, I don't know Japanense.

*Lots of dangers on a football field. Ants aren't supposed to be one of them. Sad.

*Johnny Goofball has won me over, at least as a football player. Sure he had a couple of throw-it-up-for-grabs lucky completions against Alabama. But it was pure skill and elite athleticism that even put him in a position to be lucky. And in two games against Nick Saban's vaunted defense, Manziel has completed 73% of his passes for 907 yards and seven touchdowns. That's legit. He's a bigger, better Doug Flutie. And that ain't bad.

*I root against Walter White. He's a bad person who makes careless decisions and profits from putting deadly drugs on the streets. And I root for Will McAvoy. He's a fair person who makes educated decisions and spews truths about being a Republican in 2013:
The problem is now I have to be homophobic. I have to count the number of times people go to church. I have to deny facts and think scientific research is a long con. I have to think poor people are getting a sweet ride. And I have to have such a stunning inferiority complex that I fear education and intellect in the 21st Century. But most of all, the biggest new requirement, really the only requirement, is that I have to hate Democrats. And I have to hate Chris Christie for not spitting on the President when got off Air Force One.
I know it's chic to get really emotional about A&E's gripping show, but to me The Newsroom > Breaking Bad. Smart and clever beats bold and violent on my TV every time. Even though it was clear Aaron Sorkin's latest episode was written as a series finale - Will proposes to MacKenzie, etc. - I'm thrilled the show will return to HBO for a third season next spring.

Signing Brian Waters Late: Shrewd or Scrambling?

Sorry, Cowboys haters, you can't have it both ways.
On Monday you were ridiculing the team for its lack of quality along the offensive line. On Tuesday Jerry Jones did something about it, and now you chastise him as "desperate."
Your agenda is as pathetic as it is transparent.
I get it, the fact that the Cowboys haven't won a Super Bowl since before the DVR makes you a tad skeptical. But they can't be wrong for doing the total opposite: Nothing. And something.
I know, I wanted to sign Brian Waters two years ago. But to label the Cowboys' acquisition of him Monday as desperate and to accuse them of "scrambling" is just wrong.
   How's this?
On Sept. 4, 2011 the New England Patriots signed Waters and were hailed as "shrewd."
On Sept. 3, 2013 the Dallas Cowboys signed Waters and are criticized as "scrambling."
Waters is 36. He sat out last year. The Cowboys tried to sign him during training camp, but the veteran didn't bite at backup money for a starting job.
Bottom line: He makes DeMarco Murray a better runner, Tony Romo a better passer and the Cowboys a better football team.
You can rip Jones for the root of this problem: His free-agent swings-and-misses on Mackenzy Bernadeau and Nate Livings. But you can't rip him for trying to fix what all of us agree is the Cowboys' biggest problem.

Jason Garrett: Less Hat; More Power

Off to the Cowboys' Annual Kick-Off Luncheon at AT&T Stadium today where - I can almost guarantee - there will be no twerking or rump shaking or booty poppin' or ... hats.
It's indoors. It's formal. And it's becoming normal these days to see Jason Garrett without headwear.
In Texas, the old saying to identify a fraud goes “Big hat; No cattle.”
At Valley Ranch, the new slogan to validate a leader is “No hat; More command.”
In case you haven’t noticed, Garrett this preseason has stopped wearing his trademark topper – hat or visor – on the sideline. But, if you were paying attention last Saturday night at AT&T Stadium, he’s wielding more control than ever.

Cowboys 24, Bengals 18 : My Top 10 Whitty Observations

As is customary, the Cowboys' media representative strolled through the team's locker room at AT&T Stadium Saturday night alerting us dorks with notepads, microphones and cameras to the details of players' impending interviews.
"Tony Romo," she said - as we all anticipated the usual will be in the interview room in five minutes - "will be in the coaches' office ... on speakerphone."
Okay ... Wait, what the what?!
After an impressive pre-season finale in which he threw for two touchdowns in the win over the Bengals, seems the quarterback left the stadium without speaking to the media. And now, to make it right, he was calling in. From his car.
No biggie. No crime. Just weird. Never in four decades covering covering this team have I enjoyed listening to a player hold his post-game presser via phone.
While that was surprising, the Cowboys' cuts from 90-75 this week won't be.
Dallas has to make 13 roster moves before tomorrow. One will be the moving of Tyrone Crawford (who tore his Achilles the first week of training camp) to Injured Reserve. Other names you'll read about but won't miss:
Receivers Anthony Amos. Jared Green and Eric Rogers. Tight end Colin Cochart. Linebacker Deon Lacey. Kicker Brett Maher. Defensive linemen Jabari Fletcher, Jerome Long and Jason Vega. And, despite his interception to seal Saturday night's win, defensive back Xavier Brewer, along with Jakar Hamilton.
For my Top 10 Whitty Observations on the game, let's jump over to NBC 5's Blue Star Blog.
