*Cowboys 31, Redskins 16: My Top 10 Whitty Comments are over at NBC 5's Blue Star Blog.
*Like most of you guys, I was happily floored by Texas' performance Saturday in the Cotton Bowl. Their 36-20 dismantling of previously unbeaten OU is a shocking season-saver and allows Mack Brown to tell his critics to (at least for one more week) put a sock in it. But the end was a tad embarrassing. The Gatorade dump on the head coach, for an October win? I know OU is the rival now and Texas' seniors finally beat the Sooners, but not long ago the 'Horns raised National Championship banners.
*Good for Boston. With the Marathon bombing and Aaron Hernandez and the (relatively unimportant) break-up of the Celtics, it's been a rough year in Beantown. But Sunday was one for the ages. Tom Brady by day; David Ortiz by night. Magical. Closest thing I can remember for the Metroplex is Oct. 23, 2011. On that Sunday we were treated to a doubleheader of amazing individual performances by 20-somethings. In the afternoon DeMarco Murray rushed for a Cowboys'-record 253 yards in a win over the Rams, and at night - just across the street - Derek Holland threw 8 1/3 innings of two-hit baseball as the Rangers shut out the Cardinals in Game 4 of the World Series.
*Love me some Chris Arnold. Great guy, and a better teammate. In fact, I helped him get his gig at 105.3 The Fan. But there's no defending his blatant, cut-and-paste plagiarism of a Tony Romo article that he claimed as his own "next level analysis" piece over at CBSDFW.com. Knowing that the CBS suits in New York have already fired a Houston station employee this year for merely asking whether an Oklahoma City Thunder cheerleader was fat, I fear for Chris' job. He wasn't part of GBag Nation's Texas-OU preview show Saturday morning and I'm told that the ultimate decision will be made by corporate, not The Fan. You guys know how I feel about credit attribution, and Chris - like the rest of of us - learned in high school that stealing someone else's work is a no-no. I will offer this as Chris' only defense: He's not a writer. The Fan has recently mandated - for no more pay, I might add - that its on-air hosts contribute to its web site in the form of blogs. But that's like gathering all your plumbers together on the job site and decrying that they also need to run the electrical wiring. This just in: Not everyone can write. Playing people out of position is a dangerous strategy, and it's backfired on The Fan. Granted, it's not a strong defense for Chris. But looks like it's his only defense.

*Today? Sorry for today's smaller-than-usual portion, but I got home at 1 a.m. after TV on NBC late last night and I've got lots of Pizza Buzzin' to do this morning in Fort Worth starting at 8:30. We'll return you to your regularly scheduled menu on Tuesday. Don't be a stranger.

WHITT'S END: 9.24.13
Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End
*Big blow to the Cowboys' defense with Anthony Spencer needing microfracture knee surgery and likely being out for the year. Dallas is already without Jay Ratliff three more games and Tyrone Crawford suffered a season-ending injury early in training camp. I know new defensive line coach Rod Marinelli is working magic with the likes of George Selvie and Nick Hayden and Edgar Jones. But the Cowboys can't keep this up with only DeMarcus Ware and Jason Hatcher anchoring the front four. Can they?
*My former radio partner needs help. Serious help. At least he's getting heart-felt advice from friend and former Ticket co-worker, Grubes. I don't take Greggo's calls or texts and I no longer follow him on Twitter, but couple of friends alerted me Sunday that he was attacking 105.3 The Fan's Mike Fisher. In attempting to harpoon Fisher's breaking news about Spencer not playing against the Rams, Greggo used words like "truth", "class", "integrity", "slimy" and "unethical." Laughable. Those criticisms coming from a guy with sub-freezing credibility. Those accusations coming from a guy who, among his litany of lies, skipped out on his RAGE teammates, fabricated stories about his own mother to miss work, and misstated his days of supposed sobriety on the air. Ring a bell? Sorry, but at this point anyone who believes Greggo's version of "just tellin' the truth" is simply stubborn, naive or as fucked up as he is. Greggo was once a radio icon in DFW. But these days he's nothing more than an alarmingly skinny 53-year-old habitual liar with a failed blog, banished to a life of irrelevance and Internet trolling with his days spent buying Heineken at Still On The Corner in Gainesville and picking nonsensical Twitter fights in a lame attempt to get people to notice him. It truly saddens me. We had some great times, made some good radio and I'll always have a special place in my heart for him. But I won't help Greggo until he finally decides to help himself.
*See, that's the maddening thing about your Rangers. Monday night they used the worst team in baseball as their personal pinata with Alex Rios' cycle, 12 runs, a complete game by Derek Holland and lots of fireworks and fun for the whole family. 12-0. Can't help but be a tad frustrated that this team wins games 8-2 and 12-0, but can't scratch out a single tally in all those 1-0 defeats.
*What do you mean your son almost drowned at the football camp of some Cowboys? Sounds to me like the players should almost pay you a bunch of money. Unless, that is, the kid suffered permanent physical damage. If so, prove it.
*After shredding the Raiders on Monday Night Football, Broncos' quarterback Peyton Manning is on pace for 475 completions, 6,096 yards and 64 touchdowns. All would be NFL records.
*Is it too early, or does DeMarco Murray's 175-yard rushing performance demand an apology from his critics? I discuss over at NBC 5's Blue Star Blog.

*Texas Motor Speedway grand poobah Eddie Gossage has long been openly jealous of the Cowboys' popularity. He's got a bigger venue. Bigger one-day crowds. And now a bigger video board. His new "Big Hoss" will be 70 yards long, 10 bigger than JumboJerry at AT&T Stadium. But it's all relative. I went to Charlotte Motor Speedway and saw what is currently the world's biggest board and, honestly, at that giant track it looked like a 32" tube TV in the corner. TMS' new toy is huge, but it won't appear nearly as big as the Cowboys'.
*Credit Joe Nathan with another save, with assists from Elvis Andrus and Holland. Seems the former president of the Southeast Arlington Little League stole the organization's $20,000 in a move that threatened to cancel the Fall season. Until the Rangers stepped in. Very cool.
*Watched a sneak preview of the JFK movie Parkland last night at the Angelika Film Center. Nov. 22 is the 50th anniversary of the assassination, so get prepared for the onslaught. The movie starts with, um, a bang. Gripping first 30 minutes, detailing President Kennedy's transportation to Parkland Hospital and the efforts to keep him alive despite a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Not as quite as gruesome as the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan, but it's pretty damn intense. And bloody. And hectic. You'll learn details about the ornery medical examiner, Oswald's looney mom and the life of Abraham Zapruder. But mostly, I was reminded how terrible the whole ordeal makes our city look. Says a secret service agent of Dallas at one point, "What a horrible place to die."
*Can't imagine the backlash Jerry Jones would receive if he allowed a player to play in a game, then be sent to rehab immediately after. The 49ers botched Aldon Smith's care from the start.
*More proof that Brad Sham is as eloquent in life as he is behind the Cowboys' microphone, this is his Facebook posting re: the moving of his son, Paul:

My son is off to embark on a new chapter of his life tonight. It will separate us physically. His mom already came to terms dealing with that. This feels like a big step, and I want Sunray Paul Lewis Sham to be reminded that his mom and dad are his biggest cheerleaders. The bumps in the road don't alter our belief in you, son, nor the way we love you, which is more than anything in the world. Your dad will always be here for you, wishing you what parents wish their children most: safety, health, happiness and peace.

*College football uniforms are officially outta control. Is this Virginia Tech's helmet for Thursday night's game against Georgia Tech? Or have The Flintstones joined the ACC?
*Loved me some Dexter, but the series finale on Showtime was underwhelming, no? He killed his sister, sailed into a hurricane and then ... grew a beard and became an anonymous logger with a creepy stare? Still, any show that can get you to root for a serial killer has to be considered a smashing success.
*Local TV audiences from last Sunday: Cowboys-Rams 943,000. Rangers-Royals 69,000. The Emmys 365,000. Bears-Steelers 454,000. Breaking Bad 241,000.
*Sign you're getting old: You have more passion for what you see than what you do.
*An experienced rock-climber fell to her death in Grapevine because she inexplicably forgot to hook into her safety line. The Devil is in the details.

*Toldja baseball over-celebrates. Even its babies drink beer in partying locker rooms.
*Stop me if you've heard this one. Pacman Jones arrested. But hey it's only the 8th time he's been jailed since 2005. Probably just another misunderstanding.
*Yeah, I'll get crap wrong from time to time. And I'll do my best to correct it. I forgot Dan Bailey's missed 21-yard field goal in San Francisco back in 2011. So before Sunday's push to the right against the Rams he had made 38 field goals in a row under 40 yards.
*I'm posting this video of me and Pat Doney on NBC 5's Big Game Sunday not because of our keen insight on Cowboys-Rams. But because I dare you to focus on our commentary when Carly Patterson tumbles past in the background. Giggle.
*Today? May visit my old friend Jay Lombardo to check out some new threads. Don't be a stranger.

WHITT'S END 6.28.13
Whether you're at the end of your rope or merely the end of your week, welcome to Whitt's End
*It's been a wild week in local radio, what with The Ticket's BaD Radio almost moving to 105.3 The Fan before Cumulus sweetened the pot enough to keep Bob Sturm and Dan McDowell home. But now we're on the verge of another popular show perhaps moving ... off the air. From what I hear, The Russ Martin Show's contract is up Monday (July 1) and there has been little interest shown by parent company Clear Channel Media to re-sign Russ and his sidekicks in the afternoon. Surely you remember Russ, right? Not certain exactly what's going on at 97.1 The Eagle, but I smell big changes coming sooner rather than later.
*Mavs nailed it on several fronts in Thursday night's NBA Draft. First, they selected who I think will be their point guard of the future in Miami's Shane Larkin. The Mavs are comparing him to J.J. Barea, but I predict he'll be the starting point guard opening night. But more importantly, they started cutting salary with an eye toward making a run at free-agent center Dwight Howard next week. Needing to shave $3.8 million off the books at the beginning of the night, Dallas now - after two trades down and the dumping of 2012 draft bust Jared Cunningham - needs to only trim another $2.7 million to be able to offer Howard a max contract with a first-year salary of $20.5 million.
*That said, Mavs' GM Donnie Nelson admitted that if Syracuse's Michael Carter-Williams or Michigan's Trey Burke would've been available at No. 13, Dallas would've kept the pick and taken either of them.
*And if you don't believe Howard-to-the-Mavs is realistic, read this story and then check out what Dirk Nowitzki revealed at Mavs' draft headquarters last night. Yep, he's already picked up the phone and called L.A.
*As I wrote Thursday, the Cowboys shouldn't cut Josh Brent just because the Patriots' released Aaron Hernandez. But, after Brent's second positive test for marijuana while on probation for Intoxication Manslaughter, I don't think there's any choice now but to cut him. Right? They are going to cut him, Right?! Isolated irresponsibility resulting in an accident I can stomach. Repeated, ridiculous behavior, however, cannot be tolerated. Dumb actions? Maybe. Dumb people? No thanks.
*So Kanye West and Kim Kardashian named their child "North." No kidding. Now when North West gets fired from CBS Radio and the boss cites a "different direction", he'll actually be telling the truth.
*When Derek Holland is good, he's great. Totally handcuffed the Yankees to the tune of a 2-hitter Thursday afternoon in The Bronx. Makes you wonder where that guy is every fifth day doesn't it? Speaking of Rangers' pitchers, don't look now but Yu Darvish hasn't won a game since May 16.
*Johnny Manziel is the perfectly irritating combination of pampered and petulant. News surfaced this week that he faced suspension before his 2012 Heisman Trophy season until Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin bailed him out. And recently he received a simple parking ticket on campus, prompting him to Tweet: Bullshit like tonight is a reason why I can't wait to leave college station ... Bet the 12th Man finds that awfully Spirit-of-Aggieland endearing.

*Back in 2011 it was all smiles. We dressed up in our Sunday best and christened the joint in Victory Park known as The Fan Sports Lounge. Great location across from AAC. Cool broadcast booth inside. And ... something horrible happened on the way to happily ever after. Just 19 months later I strolled over to check out the place last night and ... it's no longer The Fan Sports Lounge. Can I interest you in The Point at Victory Park?
*Looks like the Rangers won't have an All-Star starter for the first time since 2007. I'd like to make a case for one, but I don't think I can.
*Coolest, most impressive thing I've seen in 2013 is Nik Wallenda's tight-roping "Skywalk" over the Grand Canyon last Sunday. The views were breath-taking and the guy's calm while balancing 1,500 feet in the air amidst 30-mph wind gusts was amazing. And, unlike when he traversed Niagara Falls, this time he wore no safety harness. Death was a real possibility, especially when he crouched down on the wire in fear as the winds bounced it wildly. Crazier still: The dude ran the final 30 feet. Standing. Clapping.
*Two years ago they toted a trophy through downtown Dallas as members of the Mavericks. Now? Jason Kidd is Jason Terry's boss on the Brooklyn Nets. I know, weird. And sad. But more weird.
*I've listened to WBAP 820 AM all my life. But just this week I learned what the call letters stand for: We Bring A Program. No, I'm not making that up.
*With the selection of Tim Hardaway, Jr. by the Knicks last night, make it 13 consecutive years there has been a player taken in the NBA Draft who is the son of a former player.

*Wouldn't you just looove to see the actual, unedited commercial of Shaq trying to squeeze his 330-pound Kazaam into that Buick?
*Once upon a time I accidentally called Fox 4's Mike Doocy "Douche". Accidentally. Promise. See for yourself.
*It was 10 years ago that the NFL got all offended at the egregious sex and crimes portrayed in the fictional ESPN series, Playmakers. But in the Hernandez saga, the league has itself a much more troubling, real storyline. And turns out Hernandez may have killed his victim because the guy had info about Hernandez previously killing two other people? What The What?!
*Do Atheists scream "Oh, God!!!" during sexual climax?
*Last week in this space I wrote about the tiny window of clay-to-grass-court transition allowed tennis players before Wimbledon. How has that manifested? In uncertain footwork, which leads to slipping, which leads to injuries, which leads to spotty play and, ultimately, inconsistent results like the early-round upsets of Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova.
*I'm not proud of this, but I don't care about George Zimmerman's trial these days nearly as much as I did about news of the actual incident and his killing of Trayvon Martin in February 2012. I blame ... life. And the s-l-o-w legal system.

*Speaking of movies, I give The Purge 4.5 out of 10 and Now You See Me a solid 6.5. Purge is a great premise that's underdeveloped and predictable, and Now You See Me suffers from saturated plot syndrome (i.e., over-thinking). In other words, one gave me too little and the other too much.
*Please visit my advertisers' web sites and, even better, buy what they're selling. Without them there is no us. Well, technically we'd still be alive and stuff, but we wouldn't have this comfy club to congregate in daily. A hearty thanks to Home Marketing Services, Vandergriff Honda, Apple Moving, Baby Dolls, LS Wealth Strategies, D Custom Tailors, Pollo Campero, Riggs Rub and WAV Electronics.
*So my Dad asks me to give a shoutout to all our friends in Johnson County, better known as JoCoMoFo. Seems because of termite damage he needed an outside wall replaced on his wood-frame homestead in Rio Vista. He's hard to please, but he loved the work performed by KT Custom Construction. So, here ya go Pops: For all your home repair needs in that area call Kris at 817.240.8315.
*This weekend? After my standing tennis appointment Saturday morning, Sybil and I are throwing a pool party in the afternoon until ... ? Sunday, we will most certainly enjoy a quiet Sabbath. And, come Monday, I'm predicting new bikini pics uploaded to my photo galleries (you're welcome). Don't be a stranger.
*Anchorman 2 (debuting Dec. 20) can't get here fast enough. If you don't think the original was funny, I'm afraid we just can't be friends.
