WHITT'S END: 12.23.13

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End:

*I'm not saying a referee's mistake helped the Cowboys pull off their Hail Murray in Washington. But it sure didn't hurt. Look at these pics for proof ...

*Wait, in the post-game locker room Cowboys' vice president Stephen Jones screamed at which national media reporter? ...

*Is this the best high-school football team of all-time? ...

WHITT'S END: 11.21.13

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End:

*A frog for a Prince. In 2010 Ian Kinsler proposed a fantasy baseball trade to Prince Fielder: "Us for him?" Last night there was no "him" - as in Giants' pitcher Tim Lincecum - but there certainly was the reality of "us." The Rangers acquiring Fielder and $30 million in exchange for Kinsler is a complete coup for Texas. Fans in the Metroplex had long tired of Kinsler's pop-ups and he was blocking the progress of Jurickson Profar at second base. Though his power numbers have declined (from 50 homers in '07 all the way down to 25 in '13) and his playoff numbers are abysmal (.196, 1 homer, 3 RBI in 24 games), there's no reason not to think the Rangers' new 1st baseman can't put up 45 homers and 120 RBI whacking away at Rangers Ballpark's short porch in right field. The deal leaves the Rangers with an infield of Fielder, Profar, Elvis Andrus and Adrian Beltre. And the cash means that over the next four years they'll pay Fielder only $4 million more than were going to pay Kinsler. This is a huge win for Jon Daniels.

*Turned out to be a great night for Metroplex sports, because the Mavs are for real. Down 18 to the Rockets and being bludgeoned by Dwight Howard's post play, they rallied behind the dynamic duo of Dirk Nowitzki and Monta Ellis for a pulsating 123-120 victory. That's as good of an NBA game as you'll ever see in November. Dirk was vintage. Ellis was relentless. And, despite being abused by Howard all game, Samuel Dalembert grabbed the game's key rebound. The Mavs will improve to 9-4 (7-0 at home) when they take care of 1-win Utah Friday night.

*Like his stats and persona and life, A-Fraud's temper tantrum yesterday was nothing more than a staged, transparent attempt to win public sentiment in his appeal of a 211-game suspension for his role in the Biogenesis PED scandal. How convenient that just 10 minutes after he "stormed" out of the proceedings his representatives sent out a prepared statement. And when he flatly denies taking steroids or attempting to tamper with witnesses or evidence in the case, I flatly think he's lying. As usual. Sorry, A-Fraud, but for most of us your sideshow distraction won't camouflage the fact that you're a cheater, a liar and, yes, a fraud. If A-Fraud really is innocent, why did it take him this long to say so? And why did he do it on a radio show, and not under oath?

*I said yesterday that the Rangers would miss David Murphy more than Nolan Ryan. Now you know why. Daniels is the organization's baseball brain. And Fielder is the new face of the franchise.

*Considering she's now suffered major injuries in violent crashes twice in nine months, I've about decided that Lindsey Vonn just isn't a very good skier.

WHITT'S END: 10.18.13

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End

*As I wrote for CBS back in March when this Rangers' power struggle was beginning to simmer, Nolan Ryan's departure was inevitable and necessary. And - I know this is blasphemy - his legacy is overrated. Fans of ol' Nolan want to believe it was Big Tex who triumphantly returned to Arlington in 2008 and kick-started the moribund franchise. Trust me, I was giddy when Nolan came back. Wrote as much in a cover story for the Dallas Observer. But truth? Jon Daniels had the wheels in motion toward success before Ryan arrived as CEO. Daniels hired Ron Washington and acquired players like Elvis Andrus and Neftali Feliz and Matt Harrison and Josh Hamilton and stockpiled the No. 1 farm system in baseball without Nolan. Ryan gets credit for making the Rangers' pitch better. But Daniels gets credit for giving the Rangers better pitchers. Daniels is the Xs and Os architect; Ryan is the symbolic figurehead. When you go to the State Fair you take a picture of Big Tex, but you enjoy the rides designed by Daniels. I'm not saying having Ryan in the organization is a bad thing, just that Daniels is far more valuable. It's Jimmy vs. Jerry, without the rings. Except, this time, the local team escaped with the more essential piece. I get that fans are bummed. Nolan is a man's man from Texas who hunts and headlocks and despises sissy conveniences like bottled water and hair product. But you really think today's Major League Baseball player is attracted to Texas because of Nolan Ryan? Sorry, but Yasiel Puig has zero idea who Nolan Ryan is. Just like, I guarantee there are more than a handful of players at Valley Ranch who can't quite put their finger on that guy Roger Starbuck. In the end, Nolan's ten-gallon ego got too big for his britches. He shoved Chuck Greenberg out of town. But, thankfully, Jon Daniels shoved back.

*That fourth all-sports talk-radio station teasing us with a Fall launch has been further delayed. And this time one of the high-ups involved is telling me it's the House Republicans' fault. Basically the station plans to be on an AM frequency that needs a stronger signal. The power upgrade, however, is awaiting final approval from the FCC. Which, of course, was among the entities temporarily paused by the government shutdown.

*Sorry, haters, but the Cowboys are still America's Team. So says, um, America. They're also the NFL's most valuable franchise and - to be fair - they haven't won a Super Bowl in, oh, going on 6,474 days.

*Most days the loyal readers of this here blog poke and prod and disagree and generally attempt to kick me in the nuts. But sometimes they show up and give me money. Well, sorta. Danny Stephens did me some detective work and discovered that somebody or something owes me $313. It's just waiting for me to claim it, and they'll send me the check. It's not a scam. It's Texas' unclaimed property. Check it out. And if you get found money, thank Danny.

*The New Jersey Nets last night retired Jason Kidd's No. 5. Wonder if the Mavs - er, Mark Cuban - will ever do the same? Kidd started as No. 5 in Dallas in '94, but wore No. 2 when he returned and helped lead them to their title in '11. Of course then he backed out of deal to stay in Dallas and pissed off the owner and ... some day that ice will thaw. But not yet.

WHITT'S END: 10.4.13

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End

*So - according to Shan and Choppy on my old station - the night after the Rangers get eliminated by the Rays, their brass has a meeting in Arlington. At some point Nolan Ryan and Jon Daniels start discussing Jackie Moore's role. Then debating, then arguing and next thing you know Ron Washington has to step in to keep it from escalating into a physical confrontation. Proving that JD has the ultimate power, Moore was fired. While I disagree that Moore doesn't have a valuable place on Wash's bench, I've said it before and I'll say it again: Ownership - and fans - should covet the GM and let Big Tex mosey out of town. Besides, really? At age 66 Nolan still thinks the best way to resolve disputes is to put people in a headlock? Embarrassing.

*Tony Romo has thrown one interception in 151 passes. Last year at this time he'd thrown eight interceptions in 152 passes. If you wanna continue blaming him for the Cowboys' mediocrity go ahead. But I tell you why you're wrong to do so over at NBC 5's Blue Star Blog.

*Hook, um? Texas needed a couple lucky breaks to beat Iowa State by one point last night. First, the Hail Mary for a touchdown to end the first half. Then the bad call at the goal line in the final minute. Jonathan Gray's knee wasn't down when he had the ball stripped from him by the Cyclones' linebacker. Should've been a fumble. Should've been ball game, and an Iowa State win. While ISU coach Paul Rhoads was fittingly fuming, Mack Brown was somehow giddy about his team: "I'm so damn  happy tonight. I'm really excited about moving forward." UT, 2-0 in the Big 12, moves forward to Saturday's annual battle against OU in the Cotton Bowl. Where it will get demolished. Speaking of Texas, it really bothers me that the rounded numbers on their helmets don't match the numbers with angled corners on their jerseys. Anyone else?

*After offering details of Randy Galloway's dwindling radio career, I realized 103.3 FM ESPN has afternoon baseball today. That means he's down to one final show: Monday 3-6. That's assuming the station will bump baseball to one of its sister stations to make room for one last Cowboys' overreaction Monday of the icon's career. I'm told that the new afternoon show on ESPN will be Matt Mosley, paired with a partner who is an in-town guy and a "familiar voice" to Metroplex radio listeners.

*Three gigs I believe we waaaay overrate: Tap-dancing, DJing and orchestra conducting. In tap-dancing, the wildly animated foot movements never quite match the sound, and I think the swinging arms are merely designed to distract us from the lack of synchronicity. If you think about, DJs aren't really creating anything unique. They're just taking others' music and morphing them together. It'd be like a "master chef" who simply serves two restaurants' signature dishes ... on the same plate. And do we really need a conductor giving direct, demonstrative cues to a professional orchestra? If you're at that level as a, say, violinist, you've played Beethoven's 5th a gabillion times. You pretty much know the song. The Dallas Symphony Orchestra, for example, needs a conductor about as much as I need an editor hovering over my keyboard and pointing his cocky wand to the C as I begin to type Cowboys.

WHITT'S END: 10.3.13

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End

*Wednesday's firing of Rangers' bench coach Jackie Moore alerts us as to who is really in charge in Arlington these days: Jon Daniels. Moore was a long-time Nolan Ryan guy. A baseball lifer. A 70-something whose seen 5,000+ games from the dugout alongside the likes of Whitey Herzog, Billy Martin and Lou Pinella. But the GM apparently wants sitting beside manager Ron Washington someone more like, well, the GM. A younger guy with a statsier approach. Daniels wants science and scouting over guts and guile. Tell that to Joe Torre, who won four titles in the Yankees' dugout with Don Zimmer in his hip pocket. Like Zimmer, Moore still thinks WAR is something to be avoided, not studied. Besides, who is Wash gonna hug from now on after wins? Probably his pack of cigs.

*Been telling you for a month or so that Randy Galloway's radio days were numbered. Now we know the exact number: 3. Galloway, a DFW media icon for 50 years, will do his regular shift on 103.3 FM ESPN Thursday, Friday and then hang up his microphone after Monday afternoon's 3-6 p.m. show. I'm told sidekick Matt Mosley will get a new partner for the prime-time slot starting next week. Who it be? Stay tuned.

*I got an idea: Let's NOT tailgate in a Cowboys' jersey before they play Chargers in San Diego.

*Went to the Office Depot on Highway 377 in Watauga yesterday in search of a computer, etc. for our Pizza Buzz office. Me: "So, um, what's the difference between this one and that one?" Associate in red shirt: "Hmm. Let me see ... Well, I don't think anything." Really? Because the price between the computers was $100. In hamburger money that's like $3. A burger for $7 better be a whole different - hopefully better - than the one for $4. Even more frustrating, after 20 minutes figuring out which one was best for us, yep, you guessed it ... neither one was in stock. Bought the display out-of-box at a big discount and am hoping for the best. By the way, Dead & Gone: Desktop computer "towers." Now they're just somehow "built in" to the monitor. Freaky.

*Tell me again that baseball doesn't over-celebrate. The Rays have already enjoyed three champagne parties - clinching tiebreaker, winning tiebreaker, winning Wild Card - before the first pitch of the ALDS.

*The Cowboys are 2-0 at home. Amazingly, they haven't started 3-0 since the days of Aikman, Emmitt, Deion, Texas Stadium and Prince. Yep, 1999. One of the reasons? AT&T Stadium - where the Cowboys are 20-15 - just  isn't an intimidating place. I discuss over at NBC 5's Blue Star Blog.

WHITT'S END: 10.2.13

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End

*The fall of the female from Metroplex media continues, as Emily Jones and Gina Miller are leaving their respective TV stations. Jones, best known for her work as a Rangers' reporter, is done on Fox Sports Southwest at the end of this month. And Miller, sports co-anchor at CBS 11 and TXA 21, announced she is temporarily leaving TV. Jones, at FSSW for nine years, says she wants to find a better family balance while Miller, at CBS for eight years, plans to pursue "entrepreneurial projects." Miller recently asked for my advice on starting her own website, so perhaps she's merely expanding her empire in a different direction? Those two departures add to a 2013 that has already seen Jasmine Sadry, Sybil Summers and Jane Slater fired from 105.3 The Fan and Kelly Webster ousted at 103.3 FM ESPN. For viewers and listeners, this isn't a good trend. At all.

*Still wanna bash Tony Romo? He's thrown eight touchdowns and only one interception. Just think, your quarterback could be named Josh Freeman. Or even Matt Schaub, who has thrown a Pick Six in three consecutive games for the reeling Texans.

*Michael Jordan says that, in his prime, he could beat LeBron James 1-on-1. "I don't think I would lose," he said, "other than to Kobe Bryant, because he steals all of my moves." Jordan has six rings, accented by six Finals MVPs. Are we really having this discussion? LeBron is bigger and stronger. But as for basketball acumen and refined skills like dribbling, shooting, scoring and defense, Jordan has every advantage. Gimme Jordan in 5.

*I'll give you a new iPhone tip, but I need some help in exchange. Deal? If you downloaded the new ios7, you can now see exactly when you sent/received a text instead of just a conversation approximation. Simply swipe left on a text and, bam, the exact time. You're welcome. Now, help me with this: How the heck do I delete an iCloud account? When I attempt this in Settings, it must first turn off the "Find My iPhone" function, which requires the password to the email I originally used to set up the account. That's my CBS email and, as many of you remember, I don't exactly have access to that anymore. How do I kill something that's already dead? Advice?

*Wasn't ready for the Rangers' season to end. Hard for me now to get invested or, honestly, really even interested in baseball's post-season. Nor am I ready for what's next on the sports calendar: Hockey. As in, quick, who won the Stanley Cup last year? Yeah, me neither. Blah humbug.

Soft Schedule, Lone Star State Neighbors Help Rangers Out of Funk In a Hurry

Two weeks ago this morning: The Rangers had been swept in Cleveland. Back-to-back shutouts. No runs in 21 innings. Joe Nathan on the trade block. Six games behind the Oakland A's.
   Woe was us.
And then ... A closed-door meeting. A Nelson Cruz season-ending suspension. Lots of Angels and Astros and crap on the soft schedule. Presto, the Rangers are in first place in the AL West.
   It gets better.
*Friday the Rangers gave up only Leury Garcia to acquire Alex Rios - no offense to Mike Bacsik, but he's already the best No. 51 in franchise history, right? - and he promptly showed up in Houston and went 4 for 7 with a couple of RBI.
*Just like that, Texas has won seven in a row, 12 of 13 and has gobbled up their division deficit and spit out a 1-game lead.
*At 68-50, only the '99 team (69-49) had a better record after 118 games.
*Martin Perez on Sunday accomplished something that Yu Darvish hasn't: A complete game. He became the second-youngest pitcher in Rangers' history to have a complete-game 4-hitter. Old-timers like me will remember the dazzling debut of 19-year-old Edwin Correa in 1986. (By the way, it wasn't that long ago that we were about to give up on Perez, right?)
*And even more help is on the way, as Lance Berkman continues his rehab assignment.

Will Matt Garza Crack Jon Daniels' Top 3 Deadline Deals For Your Texas Rangers?

The Texas Rangers are better equipped to make a deep playoff run today than they were yesterday. And, after all, isn't that the point?
Some people save their pennies for a rainy day. The Rangers, meanwhile, have for years stockpiled one of baseball's best farm systems for a trade day. In acquiring front-line pitcher Matt Garza from the Chicago Cubs, the Rangers loudly re-iterated the philosophy we all want to hear:
Win now. Worry about the future later.
Garza is a stud, a fierce competitor who has been the best pitcher in baseball since June 15 (5-0, 1.24 ERA). He'll make his first start in Arlington tomorrow night against the Yankees and, if all goes well, line up behind Yu Darvish and ahead of Derek Holland in Texas' post-season rotation.
"He's an extremely talented pitcher," said Rangers' GM Jon Daniels. "He's had success in the toughest divisions and the biggest stages. He was throwing the ball as well as anybody right now. He has a power repertoire, who is something that's a little different from what we've got. And he was available. He was, in our opinion, the best guy on the market and we wanted to go out and make a push to get him."
The deal wasn't, however, a slam dunk.

Another Season, Another Rangers' Deadline-Deal With the Cubs

On a busy sports day in which the Cowboys moved closer to a corporate partner and the Mavericks diminished the role of Donnie Nelson by hiring a new GM, the Rangers have made the most of their afternoon at-bat via a trade with the Chicago Cubs.
   2012: Ryan Dempster.
   2013: Matt Garza.
In this year's deadline deal the Rangers are giving up pitcher Justin Grimm and minor-league prospects Mike Olt and C.J. Edwards in return for a Cubs' starting pitcher in hopes of a playoff push.
We'll break this deal down in detail tomorrow, but on the surface the Rangers - despite not giving up the farm (system) - need to make a deep post-season run and re-sign Garza next winter to win the trade.
   Right?

With a Departure, Rangers' Front-Office Drama Re-appears

   Rick George is gone.
But the drama in the Texas Rangers' front office remains.
With George's resignation as the organization's President of Business Operations yesterday to take the post as Colorado's Athletic Director, the cracks in the Rangers' foundation are re-surfacing. It was just four months ago - on a surreal spring training day in Surprise - that George was promoted, general manager Jon Daniels added a title of President of Baseball Operations and iconic legend Nolan Ryan was unceremoniously stripped of power by ownership.
In the wake of those moves Ryan pondered leaving the club, but decided to swallow his pride and stay. Now, with George gone, the Rangers' hiring in that hole could determine Ryan's long-term future in Arlington. If the Rangers promote from within, a satiated Ryan will likely remain invested in the team. But if the Rangers turn to a Daniels guy or even consider a national search, Big Tex might just become Big Ex.
None of this, of course, has any effect on the Rangers as they prepare for the post-All-Star schedule Friday night against the Baltimore Orioles. But it might change the face of the franchise.
And, again, I remain steadfast in my belief that Daniels - not Ryan - is the more significant player in the Rangers' front office.
   Why?

Rangers Sign Manny Ramirez. Can't Believe I Just Typed That Sentence.

He's 41. He'll have to cut his braids before he reports to Triple-A Round Rock. He was last seen playing for a team called the Rhinos in Tawain.
And, for a long time, he was the most feared hitter in all of baseball.
Yep, the Texas Rangers have signed Manny Ramirez.
That's Jon Daniels being Jon Daniels (Kenny Lofton, Vladimir Guerrero, Sammy Sosa, Eric Gagne, et all).
Hoping he gets the old Manny being Manny.
Low risk. High reward. Fun times.

Rangers' Regret: Chris Davis Has Fully Blossomed ... Elsewhere

   You knew the drill.
Chris Davis, Longview native by way of Navarro Junior College, would crush the ball at Triple-A for a couple months, get called up to the Texas Rangers and ... strikeout, strikeout and more strikeouts.
The 2006 5th-round draft pick's potential was tantalizing; His results infuriating.
So two summers ago - July 30, 2011 - the Rangers made a decision to trade Davis and pitcher Tommy Hunter to the Baltimore Orioles. For reliever Koji Uehara, and $2 million cash. Rangers' general manager Jon Daniels has made some great deals to establish his organization as one of the best in Major League Baseball, but that one has got to be one of his worst.
Because, in case you'd long given up on Davis, he's now having an epic season in Baltimore.
Only 27, he leads baseball with 31 homers (on pace for 59) and is Top 5 in slugging percentage, total bases, batting average, on-base  percentage and doubles. Last week he became the first player in MLB history to amass 30 homers and 25 doubles by July 1. Oh, and he's a lock to start next week's All-Star Game at 1st Base.
Yes, Rangers fans, you're going to need a barf bag.
