WHITT'S END: 12.12.13

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End:

*Let's go back to August. The Cowboys are preparing for their season when the ghost of football future (there is such a dude, right?) appears with this offer: Tony Romo will play so well that he throws 20 more touchdowns than interceptions (27-7) and to win the NFC East in 2013 your team gets to face five consecutive backup quarterbacks down the stretch. But if they don't beat them and make the playoffs, I take away your DVRs. Forever. We'd have taken that deal, right? Because, sure enough, look at who the Cowboys will face in the season's final five weeks: Quarterbacks who are injury replacements or who started the season as afterthought second- or even third-stringers. Matt McGloin (Raiders), Josh McCown (Bears), Matt Flynn (Packers), Kirk Cousins (Redskins) and Nick Foles (Eagles). There's a decent chance none of those teams make the playoffs. You can't say it wasn't all laid out lovingly and invitingly before the Cowboys. And, yes, if Tony Romo can't beat four of those five quarterbacks in this stretch then ... gulp.

*You Betcha Week 16: For the year I'm now up $3,985. This week I'm going with ...

WHITT'S END: 12.10.13

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End:

*This is the kind of season it's been for your Cowboys. In games in which the defense has managed to "hold" opponents under 44 points, they're 7-3. That means of course that, yep, the Cowboys - for the first time in franchise history - have surrendered 45+ points three times in a single season. But, okay, tell me one more time that it's all Tony Romo's fault.

*Not sure what's going on over at The Ticket, but ...

WHITT'S END: 11.14.13

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End:

*Guess which Cowboy is on this week's cover of ESPN Magazine? If you said "Monte Kiffin" I love your dark sense of humor, but unfortunately you're wrong. The quarterback, of course.

*In their proud 53-year history the Cowboys have never surrendered more than 5,687 yards in a season. This year's group is on pace to allow 7,000. Seven Thousand! How far are the Cowboys from being a championship defense? The Super Bowl unit of 1992 was ranked No. 1 and gave up only 3,933 yards. I got the gory details over at NBC 5's Blue Star Blog.

*Speaking of magazine covers, I have zero problem with Time's inflated image of New Jersey governor Chris Christie and the headline: The Elephant in the Room. Christie is a large human and a big player in the political game. More importantly, he's a very public figure. Comes with the territory. Eat a salad, become an accountant or otherwise develop a thick skin.

*Metroplex weather in the last 7 days:
hotashellneedyoursunglasseswindyzerohumiditycloudyraingottahaveyourumbrellastillandcalmfrostwarninghardfreezewarningeightydegreesandsunnygorgeousopenthesunroofplungingbackintothefortiestakeajacketandbundleup. Don't like it? There's always next week.

*Just the thought of Rangers' new first-base coach Bengie Molina makes us chuckle. Him giving advice to base-runners is like Emmitt Smith leading a seminar on public speaking. Couple weeks ago on Twitter a follower asked the Hall-of-Fame running back to compare himself with DeMarco Murray. Wrote Emmitt: "The different's is ... " Nope, not kidding.

*Another sports personality is struggling with the meaning of words. He's not alone, but Baylor coach Art Briles doesn't understand "humble." After signing a 10-year contract extension the Bears' coach said he is "humbled." He is? Why? Getting beat 49-17 is humbling (right, Cowboys?). Getting fired is humbling (right, Richie Whitt?). Having to wipe your father-in-law's glasses is humbling (right, Shy Anderson?). But being awarded a giant contract worth millions of dollars as an acknowledgment of the terrific job you've done? No, not humbling. Flattering, maybe. Empowering. Confidence-boosting. Rewarding. But humbling? It just doesn't fit. Now, if Baylor goes 0-11 next year and Briles get fired and this contract torn up? That, my friends, would be humbling.

*Little media birdie tells me that 105.3 The Fan program director Gavin Spittle has failed in yet another ploy. His latest unsuccessful attempt? He tried to hire the recently-retired Randy Galloway, and got rejected at the rim. Looks like instead Spittle is trying to reach out to Fort Worth through  ... Mac Engel.

WHITT'S END: 11.11.13

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End:

*Back in August I predicted this to be an 8-8 Cowboys team. My expectations - unlike a lot of fans - don't wildly vacillate with each outcome from every weekend in an NFL founded in parity. The Cowboys are 5-5. They are in first place in the NFC East. They have displayed both the ability to take the undefeated Chiefs and 1-loss Broncos to the wire, and to be blown out on the road by the NFC's second-best team. The Saints were 7-point favorites. They are undefeated at home. If you expected the Cowboys to win last night or you thought they'd be 7-3 at the Bye, may I suggest you've been delusional all along? You're the guy who buys a Smart Car and gets pissed when it doesn't have the giddyup of a Porsche. Like it or not, the Cowboys are not underachieving. Sadly, they are right on track.

*Saints 49, Cowboys 17: My Top 10 Whitty Comments are over at NBC 5's Blue Star Blog.

*Happy Veterans Day to all those who protect this country and give dorks like me the freedom to spout individual opinions. I was reading Novak Djokovic's autobiography Serve to Win over the weekend and it details growing up in Communist Yugoslavia. For the first 10 years of his life, he was told how to think, what to believe, when to eat and even what sport to play. His family's house was "allowed" electricity for only six hours a day, because the government didn't want its people getting too comfortable and uppity. Again, whine all you want. But don't forget to hug a veteran who provided you the freedom to do so.

*Enjoy today, it's going to be 70ish, sunny and gorgeous. Tomorrow? First cold front of the season arrives. High Tuesday 48 and by Wednesday morning we'll be in the 20s. Gross. But, that is good pizza-eatin' weather, right? Hintyhinthint.

*Bad as you feel this morning about the Cowboys' "devastating" loss, take a second to consider what's going on in The Philippines. Their version of a hurricane - Typhoon Haiyan - has killed at least 10,000 people. Ten thousand. Our biggest local weather killer are tornadoes. Deadliest tornado in Texas history killed 114.

WHITT'S END: 10.31.13

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End:

*From David "Arias", relatively svelte project with the Minnesota Twins in 1997, to David Ortiz, thick-'n-hearty World Series MVP in 2013. That's about as dominant an offensive post-season performance as we can remember. The Red Sox are baseball's champs mainly due to Big Gigantic Papi.

*The biggest loser this baseball season? Bobby Valentine. He somehow took a Red Sox squad that won the World Series in 2013 and managed them to a last-place record of 69-93 in 2012. Boston was an 18/1 Vegas long-shot to win it all before the season.

*How many among ESPN's stable of 43 baseball experts picked the Red Sox back in Spring Training? Zero. In fact, none of them predicted Boston or St. Louis in the World Series. We in the media talk a good game, but we really know nothing. Nothing at all.

*It worked! At least for one night. Monta Ellis was Batman, Dirk Nowitzki only had to be Robin and the Mavs started anew by beating the Hawks. We're going to have to live with Ellis' careless ball-handling (8 turnovers), but the best news was that Samuel Dalembert and DeJuan Blair hit the boards and the Mavs out-rebounded Atlanta, 42-33. I don't think the Hawks will be very good. But I think the Mavs just might be decent.

*Swear this exchange took place in my house at 4:31 a.m. Sybil: "Hey, I'm going to Wal-Mart." Me: "whatthewhatit'sfourthirty." Sybil: "For Halloween candy!"

*One of my all-time favorite athletes officially retired last night. Allen Iverson was listed at 6-feet, 160 pounds. But I interviewed him several times, we stood eye-to-eye and I go only a smidge over 5-8. His wiry athleticism, eye-blink quickness and uncanny knack for creating and making his shot amidst giant defenders always amazed me. Pound-for-pound, he's the best player in NBA history. Four scoring titles. 2001 MVP. 11-time All-Star. 3-time steals champ. All without needing a single day of "practice."

*I know he's hamstrung by his unit's injuries, but Monte Kiffin needs to be better. Somewhere on Bourbon Street, Rob Ryan is having a good chuckle at Dallas' defensive debacle.

*As a kid in Duncanville we had all had a favorite Trick-or-Treat house for Halloween. The one that gave out hot, gooey popcorn balls. No way you could get away with giving that out these days.

WHITT'S END: 10.2.13

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End

*The fall of the female from Metroplex media continues, as Emily Jones and Gina Miller are leaving their respective TV stations. Jones, best known for her work as a Rangers' reporter, is done on Fox Sports Southwest at the end of this month. And Miller, sports co-anchor at CBS 11 and TXA 21, announced she is temporarily leaving TV. Jones, at FSSW for nine years, says she wants to find a better family balance while Miller, at CBS for eight years, plans to pursue "entrepreneurial projects." Miller recently asked for my advice on starting her own website, so perhaps she's merely expanding her empire in a different direction? Those two departures add to a 2013 that has already seen Jasmine Sadry, Sybil Summers and Jane Slater fired from 105.3 The Fan and Kelly Webster ousted at 103.3 FM ESPN. For viewers and listeners, this isn't a good trend. At all.

*Still wanna bash Tony Romo? He's thrown eight touchdowns and only one interception. Just think, your quarterback could be named Josh Freeman. Or even Matt Schaub, who has thrown a Pick Six in three consecutive games for the reeling Texans.

*Michael Jordan says that, in his prime, he could beat LeBron James 1-on-1. "I don't think I would lose," he said, "other than to Kobe Bryant, because he steals all of my moves." Jordan has six rings, accented by six Finals MVPs. Are we really having this discussion? LeBron is bigger and stronger. But as for basketball acumen and refined skills like dribbling, shooting, scoring and defense, Jordan has every advantage. Gimme Jordan in 5.

*I'll give you a new iPhone tip, but I need some help in exchange. Deal? If you downloaded the new ios7, you can now see exactly when you sent/received a text instead of just a conversation approximation. Simply swipe left on a text and, bam, the exact time. You're welcome. Now, help me with this: How the heck do I delete an iCloud account? When I attempt this in Settings, it must first turn off the "Find My iPhone" function, which requires the password to the email I originally used to set up the account. That's my CBS email and, as many of you remember, I don't exactly have access to that anymore. How do I kill something that's already dead? Advice?

*Wasn't ready for the Rangers' season to end. Hard for me now to get invested or, honestly, really even interested in baseball's post-season. Nor am I ready for what's next on the sports calendar: Hockey. As in, quick, who won the Stanley Cup last year? Yeah, me neither. Blah humbug.

WHITT'S END: 9.30.13

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End

*Rangers win! Cowboys lose!! Let's keep it simple today.

*Chargers 30, Cowboys 21: My Top 10 Whitty Comments are over at NBC 5's Blue Star Blog.

*I admit, I didn't think the Rangers would be playing baseball tonight. Thought they were done after Sept. 22's kick-to-the-crotch loss in Kansas City via Grand Slam in extra innings. Give 'em credit. I know they played the putrid Astros and Angels, but they won seven consecutive elimination games to end the season. Impressive.

*So did the Rangers make the playoffs? They're kind of in Purgatory, the gray space between success and failure. Tonight at 7 on TBS they'll play Game 163, and all the statistics will count toward the regular season. But Nelson Cruz will be back and it's a do-or-die game, so it must be the post-season. Right?

*When Bruce Carter and Morris Claiborne get benched, it's hard to blame the Cowboys' coaching staff. Neither of those highly-touted guys are making plays, and Monte Kiffin is attempting to fix what is surprisingly broken.

*David Price vs. Martin Perez. Tampa's veteran ace vs. Texas' 22-year-old rookie that has made only 25 career starts, 0 in the post-season. Seems like a mismatch, but Price is 1-7 all-time against the Rangers with a 5.57 ERA and 1-2 with a 10.26 ERA in four starts in Arlington. Also in the Rangers' favor, home teams are 5-1 in Tiebreaker Play-In Games since '95.

Cowboys Against The Giants: Lucky Or Good?

   Ah, the Joy of Six.
   I said six.
The Cowboys were the benefactors of six – count ‘em, six – turnovers last Sunday night in their 36-31 win over the New York Giants. Dallas hadn’t created six takeaways in 10 years (since a win over the Washington Redskins in ’03) and never in the history of the 54-year-old franchise had it produced three takeaways in the first quarter of a game. It was reminiscent of Super Bowl XII (eight takeaways of the Denver Broncos) or even Super Bowl XXVII (nine takeaways of the Buffalo Bills), though obviously the stakes were a tad less significant.
In all, the Cowboys – who produced only 16 takeaways under defensive coordinator Rob Ryan in 2012 – recovered three fumbles and picked off three Eli Manning passes to finally beat New York in Arlington. Call it the Full Monte (Kiffin). Usually an NFL home team with a +5 turnover margin wins by 21 points. The Cowboys had to survive, escaping only when Sean Lee recovered an onside kick with 11 seconds remaining.
   Still, a win is a win is a win is a …
“You can’t win turning the ball over,” said Giants’ head coach Tom Coughlin. “That’s the bottom line.”
But were the Cowboys good? Or just at-the-right-place-at-the-right-time lucky?
Let’s break down all six takeaways and make a fair determination.

Cowboys 24, Dolphins 20: My Top 10 Whitty Observations

   10. Props to Larry Allen. The mammoth man who always chose quality over quantity when it came to communication delivered a fantastic 16-minute speech to climax his induction. Not many men have joked about drinking a "40 ounce" before slipping on the yellow jacket. But not many players have been as unique as No. 73. Said Allen, "During my career, I didn't talk that much, but I didn't have to. I used my helmet."

   9. Man it sure was good to see safety Matt Johnson finally on the field. After a year of leg injuries that totally deleted his rookie year he started Sunday night and made a couple plays and ... Oops. Sprained his left ankle making a second-quarter tackle. MRI today in Oxnard. Dangit.

   8. Strange seeing Jason Garrett on the sideline without a hat or sunglasses. We know he got stripped of authority and power in the off-season. But also someone swiped his accessories?

   7. Not that a pre-season opener is an indication of anything (the Cowboys have four of 'em in a row for crying out loud). But running the ball 34 times for 170 yards feels like a precursor of things to come under an offense directed not by Garrett, but Bill Callahan. The Cowboys promise to be more committed to the run this season and last night was a bunch of steps in that direction.

   6. First-round pick Travis Frederick had his moments playing both center and guard, but his lack of quickness was also evident when he failed to get out on a screen and the linebacker he was responsible for blocking leveled running back Phillip Tanner.
