TONY ROMO: GOODBYE COWBOYS; HELLO RING OF HONOR

Tony Romo leaves the Cowboys and the NFL today.
But even in retirement, we'll see him soon as a TV analyst. And see him - eternally - in the Ring of Honor.
No, this isn't even up for debate. No. 9, who announced his intentions to officially retire this morning, is statistically the greatest Cowboys' quarterback of all-time. And despite only two playoff wins and never a sniff of a Super Bowl over 10+ seaons, he'll deservedly reside forever inside AT&T Stadium alongside Roger Staubach, Troy Aikman and Don Meredith.
As confounding and frustrating and polarizing as his career was, Romo's path to immortality is likewise peculiar. As in, there are 21 members of the Ring of Honor. Romo will be only the third - joining Meredith and Don Perkins - with no ties to a championship.
But since Meredith got in, Romo's a slam dunk.
Dandy Don won exactly one playoff game as Dallas' quarterback in the '60s. He completed only 50% of his career passes, threw for half as many yards as Romo, won merely 47 games and lost consecutive NFL Championship Games to the Packers, including the Ice Bowl.
Romo leaves town holding the franchise passing records for yards, touchdowns and career 300-yard games. He has a Top 5 all-time passer rating. A 78-49 record. 4 Pro Bowls.
And a legacy as one of the best all-time NFL quarterbacks to never reach a conference championship game, much less a Super Bowl. Romo has his stubborn, irrational critics, but he messed around and had a career that parallels a guy named Y.A. Tittle.
In six fewer seasons, in fact, Romo won the same number of games, threw for 1,100 more yards, six more touchdowns and 131 fewer interceptions than the legendary 49ers' and Giants' quarterback. Tittle made three more Pro Bowls than Romo, but never won a single playoff game, going 0-4.
Tittle's bust resides in Canton. Romo's helmet is likely headed for Denver, before retiring in glory in Arlington.
I didn't exactly have high hopes that night in October 2006 when Bill Parcells yanked Drew Bledsoe in favor of an undrafted, untested Romo. But there's a special place in my heart for him now.
Just as there is reserved a spot for him in the Ring of Honor, and on the list of greatest NFL quarterbacks to never achieve great team success.

10 BEST NFL QUARTERBACKS TO NEVER REACH THE SUPER BOWL

   10. Dave Krieg - 19 seasons, lost only AFC Championship Game in '83.
     9. Sonny Jurgensen - Hall-of-Famer never even started a playoff game.
     8. Tony Romo - 4 Pro Bowls. Top 5 passer rating. 78 wins. 0 NFC Championship Games.
     7. Randall Cunningham - 4 Pro Bowls, lost only NFC Championship Game in '98.
     6. Philip Rivers - 5 Pro Bowls, lost only AFC Championship Game in '08.
     5. Bernie Kosar - 3 straight AFC Championship Game losses with Browns.
     4. John Brodie - '70 NFL MVP went 0-2 in NFC Championship Games.
     3. Y.A. Tittle - 32,000 yards. 242 TDs. 7 Pro Bowls. HOF. 0-4 in playoffs.
     2. Warren Moon - 9 Pro Bowls. 5 Grey Cups. HOF. 0 AFC Championship Games.
     1. Dan Fouts - Hall-of-Famer went 0-2 in AFC Championship Games in '80-81.

WHITT'S END: 12.17.13

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End:

*The Cowboys aren't necessarily successful, but no denying they are wildly entertaining. And, most of all, nauseating. No team in the NFL loses as dramatically as the Cowboys. No coach authors as many heart-breaking, kick-to-the-crotch defeats as Jason Garrett. And, yes, I do have the facts to back that up. In Garrett's 54 games as head coach, 14 have been White-Knuckler losses. Think about that. 25 percent of the time you've watched a Cowboys' game since mid-2010 it's ended in a heart-breaking loss. Wade Phillips' percentage was ...

*Can't believe this is still in my back yard ...

*A man actually gets paid to go on TV and say "You axe me what I think? It don't get no better than that. But that's lacksadaisical defense anyway." His name is ...

Cowboys 24, Dolphins 20: My Top 10 Whitty Observations

   10. Props to Larry Allen. The mammoth man who always chose quality over quantity when it came to communication delivered a fantastic 16-minute speech to climax his induction. Not many men have joked about drinking a "40 ounce" before slipping on the yellow jacket. But not many players have been as unique as No. 73. Said Allen, "During my career, I didn't talk that much, but I didn't have to. I used my helmet."

   9. Man it sure was good to see safety Matt Johnson finally on the field. After a year of leg injuries that totally deleted his rookie year he started Sunday night and made a couple plays and ... Oops. Sprained his left ankle making a second-quarter tackle. MRI today in Oxnard. Dangit.

   8. Strange seeing Jason Garrett on the sideline without a hat or sunglasses. We know he got stripped of authority and power in the off-season. But also someone swiped his accessories?

   7. Not that a pre-season opener is an indication of anything (the Cowboys have four of 'em in a row for crying out loud). But running the ball 34 times for 170 yards feels like a precursor of things to come under an offense directed not by Garrett, but Bill Callahan. The Cowboys promise to be more committed to the run this season and last night was a bunch of steps in that direction.

   6. First-round pick Travis Frederick had his moments playing both center and guard, but his lack of quickness was also evident when he failed to get out on a screen and the linebacker he was responsible for blocking leveled running back Phillip Tanner.

WHITT'S END: 8.2.13

Whether you're at the end of your rope or merely the end of your week, welcome to Whitt's End

*Saturday in Canton, Ohio is Larry Allen's crowning achievement: Induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. One of the greatest offensive linemen in the history of not only the Cowboys but also the NFL, Allen was a man of big accomplishment and little words. The over/under on his acceptance speech is two minutes (Michael Irvin's went 26.) But once upon a time - almost 12 years ago to the day - he invited me into his personal golf cart to chat extensively about how the hell he bench-pressed 700 pounds. Read for yourself. And, yes, I said seven hundred pounds. See for yourself.

*Yu Darvish was crazy good Thursday night for the Rangers. Struck out the first six Diamondbacks - all swinging - and finished with 14 K's in a dominating performance. He's had three outings this season with 14 strikeouts and no walks. I said this season. In their careers Randy Johnson only had eight and Roger Clemens seven.

*What started as my mistake led to an eye-opening observation last night at Denver International Airport. Headed back to Dallas after my Rocky Mountain High in Colorado, I left a big can of shaving cream in my carry-on. Big no-no. Confiscated at security. No biggie. But then as I'm walking into a restaurant my buddy warns me "Hey, be careful. Those things could poke somebody in the eye." He was referencing the sharp tips of my hiking poles, tucked onto the side of my backpack. Then, as we sit down to dinner, the waitress brought me a proper metal fork. A sharp plastic toothpick carrying limes. And a glass of water. So, really TSA, you'll take away shaving cream but allow me to board a plane with two 6-foot spears, metal and plastic stabbing devices and what could easily be fashioned into a sharp shard of glass? Also spotted in the airport: Guys carrying a skateboard and plastic swimming fins. You don't have to be MacGruber to envision the damage those "weapons" could levy on a plane. Seriously, are we this stupid?

*Honestly, I don't really miss radio. (Well, other than the six-figure salary.) My life is better without my former boss and ex-partner. But Sunday afternoon I will be bumming when - for the first time since 2009 - I'm not part of the official Cowboys' Pre-Game Show on 105.3 The Fan. The official radio home of the Cowboys will keep New School on its pre-game show and replace Mark Elfenbein with Ben and Skin on the post-game. They've also made a player swap on game days. Out: Rocket Ismail; In: Marc Colombo.

*Don't you if you've noticed but I'm the skeptical type. I need the facts to back things up. So when I read about tennis No. 1 Novak Djokovic drastically improving his health via a test that included holding a piece of bread to his stomach, I initially guffawed with raised eybrows. But I'll be dang if it doesn't work. It's called a Kinesiological test, and it helps you determine which foods you are allergic to. The theory: Outside influences dictate your inner body. Try this: Stand up, hold out your right arm and place your left hand on your stomach. Have a friend try to push down your extended arm. Then put a cell phone in your left hand and have the friend try again. The difference is amazing. Bottom line: Find out what's healthy for you, and stop carrying your cell phone in your front pocket. If you know what I mean.

   *Hot.

   *Not.
