WHITT'S END: 12.11.13

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End:

*Source of mine in Austin texted me on November 12. He's tight with a state congressman who's on Texas' Board of Regents, and his message was that Mack Brown was done as head coach of the Longhorns. The decision had been made. He was right. And so have been all the rumors we've been hearing for a month.

*Now the source tells me that at the top of Texas' coaching wish list are ...

WHITT'S END: 11.11.13

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End:

*Back in August I predicted this to be an 8-8 Cowboys team. My expectations - unlike a lot of fans - don't wildly vacillate with each outcome from every weekend in an NFL founded in parity. The Cowboys are 5-5. They are in first place in the NFC East. They have displayed both the ability to take the undefeated Chiefs and 1-loss Broncos to the wire, and to be blown out on the road by the NFC's second-best team. The Saints were 7-point favorites. They are undefeated at home. If you expected the Cowboys to win last night or you thought they'd be 7-3 at the Bye, may I suggest you've been delusional all along? You're the guy who buys a Smart Car and gets pissed when it doesn't have the giddyup of a Porsche. Like it or not, the Cowboys are not underachieving. Sadly, they are right on track.

*Saints 49, Cowboys 17: My Top 10 Whitty Comments are over at NBC 5's Blue Star Blog.

*Happy Veterans Day to all those who protect this country and give dorks like me the freedom to spout individual opinions. I was reading Novak Djokovic's autobiography Serve to Win over the weekend and it details growing up in Communist Yugoslavia. For the first 10 years of his life, he was told how to think, what to believe, when to eat and even what sport to play. His family's house was "allowed" electricity for only six hours a day, because the government didn't want its people getting too comfortable and uppity. Again, whine all you want. But don't forget to hug a veteran who provided you the freedom to do so.

*Enjoy today, it's going to be 70ish, sunny and gorgeous. Tomorrow? First cold front of the season arrives. High Tuesday 48 and by Wednesday morning we'll be in the 20s. Gross. But, that is good pizza-eatin' weather, right? Hintyhinthint.

*Bad as you feel this morning about the Cowboys' "devastating" loss, take a second to consider what's going on in The Philippines. Their version of a hurricane - Typhoon Haiyan - has killed at least 10,000 people. Ten thousand. Our biggest local weather killer are tornadoes. Deadliest tornado in Texas history killed 114.

   *Not.

WHITT'S END: 8.23.13

Whether you're at the end of your rope or merely the end of your week, welcome to Whitt's End

*Congrats to avid reader Robert Candeleria of Fort Worth. By paying attention this week he knew that the winning sentence was "I saw Tony Romo's baby at DFWSportatorium." Took his knowledge to Pollo Campero this morning and now he's got a full belly of free Latin chicken and two tickets to a big sporting event. Very cool.

*With a loss to the Bengals, the Cowboys (1-2) would clinch a losing record in the preseason for the first time in more than a decade. You heard me. Last time the Cowboys were under .500 in exhibitions was 2001 (2-3), when Dave Campo coached and Quincy Carter handed-off to a fella named Emmitt Smith. Since '02 the Cowboys are 28-16-1 in the preseason, a winning percentage (.622) better than over their last 11 regular seasons (.534). But they had losing pre-season records before all three of their Super Bowl seasons in the '90s. Moral to the story: There is little or no predictive value in the outcomes of NFL pre-season games. If the Cowboys fall to 1-3, shrug.

*Alerted you about a month ago to a potential fourth 24-hour sports-talk radio station in the Metroplex. Despite the obvious hurdles - it's an AM station in an already crowded market dominated by a ratings-greedy gorilla named The Ticket - apparently plans are still a go. Though the initial Sept. 1 launch date is pushed back. ... In other radio news, I still hear ol' friend Randy Galloway is very open to being bought out of his contract by his new bosses over at The Ticket. His contract runs through December, but he's lame-duck done.

*Something I bet you thought you'd be saying by now but haven't: "Man, I miss Nelson Cruz." As long as the Rangers play the Astros we can't forget about the steroid slugger.

*Dig a tad deeper and the three teens that gunned down that college baseball player in Oklahoma weren't merely thrill-seekers, but people filled with evil, hate and gangs. This was a hate-crime, right?

*How bad of an off-season has it been for Johnny Goofball? From accepting the Heisman Trophy as America's best overall college football player, to now not even considered the best quarterback in his conference. He's second-team pre-season All-SEC, behind Georgia's Aaron Murray. Gig 'Em. Giggle.

Sean Lee and My Top 10 Linebackers in the History of Your Dallas Cowboys

Last week Dick Butkus called him an "old-school ... real deal."
This week Jerry Jones didn't stroke his ego, but instead padded his bank account.
No offense to the Bears' Hall-of-Fame linebacker, but Sean Lee likely cherishes - CLUE #7: "DFWSportatorium" - cash as much as compliments. And the Cowboys owner made sure Lee remained a Dallas defensive pillar through 2019 yesterday with a six-year contract extension that - if he meets playing-time and performance incentives - could top $51 million and make him one of the NFL's highest-paid inside linebackers alongside the 49ers' Patrick Willis, Jets' David Harris and Eagles' DeMeco Ryans.
The fourth-year linebacker's job now - stay healthy.
Lee has been splendid, but only in spurts. Because of injuries that have sidelined him during his career, from a pulled hamstring in 2010 to a dislocated wrist in 2011 to last year's torn ligaments in his toe. (Somehow he survived that vicious, illegal cheap-shot from the Seahawks' punk Golden Tate.)
In Monte Kiffin's Tampa 2 defense, Lee will play middle linebacker and be asked to make plays 15 yards down the field in the passing game and also plays in the opponent's backfield in the running game.
He hasn't made a Pro Bowl. Hasn't sniffed a playoff game. Has yet to make his first tackle as middle linebacker. But with his unique combination of speed, strength and savvy, someday he'll crack my list of the Cowboys' 10 best all-time linebackers.
   Just not yet ...
