Are We Ready to Accept the Cowboys' Biggest Fan: LeBron James?

So I'm getting ready to do some TV last night with Newy Scruggs and Pat Doney on NBC 5 after Cowboys 36, Giants 31. We're on the field behind the end zone, when a wayward football comes bounding our way. It caroms off the wall and nudges our camera before harmless coming to a rest at my feet.
I casually pick it up, turn to throw it to whoever sent it our way and ...
   LeBron James?!
Yep, the best basketball player on the planet is also a huge football fan. And his favorite team is - of course - your Dallas Cowboys.
And after the game he's like a (big) kid in a (huge) candy shop. He's running routes. He's catching touchdowns. He's attempting field goals. He's sweating and smiling and exchanging cell-phone numbers with DeMarcus Ware and ...
Hey, wait a second. We hate LeBron James, right?

Breaking Good: Cowboys Finally Beat Giants in Arlington

Ah-hah! So that's the Cowboys' "secret sauce"?!
   Takeaways.
Or, better yet, Big Apple Turnovers.
It took a franchise-record three takeaways in the first quarter and six overall - the Cowboys' most since creating half-a-dozen against the Washington Redskins in 2003 - to break the voodoo, but the New York Football Giants can no longer say they're undefeated in Arlington.
Despite the plethora of gifts, it wasn't easy.
In fact, Cowboys 36, Giants 31 wasn't officially sealed until Sean Lee recovered an onside kick with 11 seconds remaining. Nor was it pretty - Tony Romo suffered bruised ribs, Dez Bryant was double-teamed into mortal production, the Giants faked injuries to slow Dallas' no-huddle offense and new defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin's unit absorbed 450 passing yards by Eli Manning.
But, alas, there's a new streak in Arlington. One that won't be broken until at least Sept. 22:
The Cowboys are undefeated at AT&T Stadium.

The Top 10 Players in NBA History. Yep, "He"'s Already on Here.

   Hate LeBron James.
In fact, I'll never forgive him for mocking Dirk Nowitzki's flu cough in the 2011 NBA Finals. But these days, in the wake of Miami's Finals' triumph over the Spurs, I can't deny how damn good of a basketball player he's become.
Last week he accomplished being only the third player in NBA history to win MVPs of both regular season and The Finals in back-to-back seasons. The other two? Bill Russell and Michael Jordan. Yeah, wow.
Facing elimination in Games 6 and 7 against San Antonio James produced two epic performances totaling 69 points, 23 rebounds and 14 assists.
Like him or not, you can't deny that greatness.
Stubborn as I am, I can no longer keep LeBron off my list of the NBA's greatest all-time players, an elite collection that doesn't include the winningest player (Bill Russell), most dominant physical specimen (Wilt Chamberlain) or 2nd all-time leading scorer (Karl Malone). I can only take solace that LeBron's 11-1 in playoff series as a member of the Heat.
And all us Mavs' fans gleefully know who gave him the one defeat. Right?

King James Almost Beheaded

During Monday's nauseating Miami Heat victory parade, someone thought it'd be a good idea to sneak the "floats" under bridges.
Who's planning the parades on South Beach, Laura Miller?
The King almost lost his crown.
   Maybe next time?

WHITT'S END 6.21.13

Whether you're at the end of your rope or merely the end of your week, welcome to Whitt's End:

*After the day-to-day teasing on here I hate to do this, but next week I'll have breaking local radio news that could re-shape the landscape you've known for three decades. And, yes, I'm talking about The Ticket. See ya Monday morning.

*I don't think there's a more dramatic play in all of sports than the relay throw to home plate trying to nab a runner in a 1-run game with two outs in the 9th. So many moving parts: Two throws, two catches, running, a slide, a convergence if not an outright collision and, of course, a tag. If you weren't standing and cringing as Elvis Andrus made a perfect throw to catcher A.J. Pierzynski to nail the A's Josh Donaldson in yesterday's 4-3 win, then you need a shot of 5hour Energy to wake your ass up. Gotta be the most exciting Rangers' win of the season, right?

*Watching the Heat beat the Spurs in Game 7 last night was nauseating, but wouldn't have been much easier to stomach watching Tim Duncan hoist another trophy. Reminds us how rare two summers ago was. The Mavs not only won their only title by beating the Heat in six games, but since then Miami has dominated the NBA. And, dang, doesn't Dallas' championship feel like 20 years ago instead of just two?

*Patriots' tight end Aaron Hernandez is in deep sh*t. Boston police issued an arrest warrant for him Friday morning in connection with the murder of Odin Lloyd, a 27-year-old who was driving an SUV in Hernandez' name and who was dating Hernandez' fiancee's sister. Lloyd was found in a field - shot in the head - a mile from Hernandez' home and so far cops have discovered that the Pro Bowl player was seen with Lloyd just hours before his death, smashed his cell phone, destroyed his home security system which included video surveillance, and hired a cleaning crew to his house Monday afternoon. Not good.

*I sincerely appreciate the feedback on this blog's curtain-lifter, "The Hard Lie 2". You guys devoured the series to the tune of - so far - 155,000+ pageviews since Monday morning's debut. Even after almost 10,000 words and 50+ documents some of you have lingering questions. Shoot them to me at Richie@DFWSportatorium.com. I'll gather them up and next week post an item of your Q's and my A's. Deal?
