WHITT'S END: 10.16.13

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End

*The Rangers are doing swell in the baseball playoffs. The ex-Rangers, that is. Even though Texas' postseason ended before it started, every time you turn on the TV to watch a game in the LCS there's a familiar player in a strange uniform playing a key role. Mostly the Rangers are playing in Boston, where Koji Uehara threw strike three for the 27th out to Jarrod Saltalamacchia to close out yesterday's Game 3 win that was set up by Mike Napoli's 7th-inning homer. The Dodgers are down 3-1 to the Cardinals in the NLCS, partly because Michael Young is 0-for-5. And of course in Detroit it was former Ranger Joaquin Benoit who gave up David Ortiz' series-shifting Slam in the 8th inning of Game 2. What does it all mean? If you want a Rangers' flavor to the World Series you're rooting for the Red Sox, but prepare for another Cardinals' title because St. Louis is void of our guys.

*1964: The Island of Misfit Toys. 2013: The D-Line of Misfit 'Boys. And, yes, pretty sure I pulled a hammy stretching for that one over at NBC 5's Blue Star Blog.

*How the heck did we men allow the invention of "throw pillows"? Bunch of bored women probably got together at one of their "coffees" where they wear sweatpants and come up with a myriad of decorative (i.e. non-functional) crap and tricked us into accepting these things by adding "throw" in front of 'em. We envisioned slant routes diving on the couch, but wound up doing what I (sometimes) do: Removing as many seven pillows off the bed every night before crawling in for a good night's sleep. Then, of course, the next morning I (rarely) help Sybil pile those same seven pillows back onto the bed after it's made. I'm not real good at math, but over the course of a year that's 5,110 throw-pillow on-and-offs our bed alone. What. The. What?!

*The Cowboys' three wins are over teams (Giants, Rams, Redskins) with a combined record of 4-13. Their three losses are to teams (Chiefs, Chargers, Broncos) with a combined record of 15-3. I sense a trend. And, based on it, we have zero idea what to expect Sunday in Philadelphia against the 3-3 Eagles.

*John Lackey played baseball at UT-Arlington, only moonlighting as a reliever from his regular position at 1st base. He's got a World Series ring ('02), an All-Star Game appearance ('07) and he's led the AL in ERA ('07). As an Angels' rookie he started Game 7 of the '02 World Series and went five innings to help Anaheim beat the Giants. He's been on bigger stages than yesterday's Game 3 of the ALCS, but he's never been better. Lackey out-dueled Justin Verlander, shutting out the Tigers for 6.2 innings. Probably not as big as UTA alum Derrick Jensen's blocked punt for a touchdown in Super Bowl 18, but it helps us forget that Mark Lowe ('11 World Series ring a bell?) ever went to school in Arlington.

   *Hot.

   *Not.

  1. You know you can still use AOL for email without paying for it, right?

    1. Sure hope he has some better advisers over at PB. Smell a "12 month and out" operation in the making...

    2. I worry about RW's Pizza Buzz as well. that area he's going into is completly saturated with every chain plus a couple of solid independents that have been around. I wish him well but I think it's gonna be a "Pizza Bust" Rock Me!

    3. The thing going for him is the concept, if people buy into it he'll make it to the 12 month mark. I think the challenge is, most of the consumers of pizza that you're delivering to are families, what percentage do you think would actually purchase alcohol? How many families will not purchase from PB because of the concept? It is a crowded market, been there done that with pizza. The concept is the key, well of course the product is as well. I really thought the Hungry Howie's franchises would do well, but the price points were too high. I'm curious to see how well this does, it's a bitch to get a new concept off the ground in a market saturated with pizza places.

    5. Well, for one thing, the little Pizza Piss bee should be holding a pizza in one hand, and takin a leak with the other! LOL!!

    6. LOL on The Shark Tank advisors to RW. Guy has been a survivor all along. Got screwed over by GW and the Fan and has already picked up three gigs. Provides solid blog as promised. Can't say the same about GW. All you haters move on to THE GIAGANTIC BLOG.

    7. Anon 8:49.....not one brought up GW until you. FWIW, I think GW is a loser also. However Whitt didn't get screwed over by The Fan, his show sucked ass, period. And the ratings showed it. Was Williams a part of that show and part of the problem? Of course. But that doesn't change the fact that everyone involved was horrible.

    1. Funny, when I tell people I'm stupid for using AOL their reaction is "Man, you're stupid for using AOL!" Um, yeah, that's the point.

  3. In the words of Foxworthy."If you are a man and have seven throw pillows on your bed, you are either gay or married."
Better get used to it. Oh and they change them regularly. See the recent commercial for Pier One where the damn pillows talk to her about 'changing colors' in the room. And those damn decorative towels in the bathroom along with soaps that YOU AREN'T SUPPOSED TO USE. And fake flowers and tons and tons of aerosol spray. Mmm relationships. yay.

  5. Just for perspective the 3 wins that the Eagles have are against teams that are 1-15 combined. I am not saying I don't agree, just that both teams are terrible and may the least terrible win...or something like that. Also, if you have a chance Richie, check out my blog at drawnoffsides.wordpress.com I would love some feedback.

  6. "But we've sort of perfected the art of hype" Speaking of hype. RW will this Sundays Cowboys Eagles game be the "NFC East Championship Game" ? Because I'm still not sure when that will be played this year. I'm sure you have the exact date.

    2. Past results are no guarantee of future results. Even when donk announcers bring up the Andy Reid " Andy is 87-0 after the bye wheel garbage ". NFL is one giant DOT race. Pick blue or red.

  7. Ok Ritchie... I guess I can see Sybil as Miley....twerking and sticking out her tounge....but Robin Thicke is 6' 2" tall and you are more like 2' 6".....looks more like Miley will be twerking with a munchkin.

    5. If there is some camel toe showing, will it make to the HOT or NOT section ?

  8. Whoa, just seen the news that Jay Ratliff has been cut. Did you know, or did you suspect?

    Wow.

    1. So is it just the injury or was that dustup with Jerry in the locker room last year really a bigger deal than either side led on? I know he's been injury prone and sometimes hard to deal with, but the last thing this team needs to do right now is cut D-linemen.

  9. He he - Throw pillow story reminds me of Along came Polly where he's like I spend 2 days per year taking the pillows off and putting them back on. Then this happens.

  11. RW..Just a not for clarification.

Dallas wins are against teams with a combined 4-13, but you failed to mention the Eagles wins are against teams that are a combined 1-15.

  12. Glad that the Cowboys got rid of Jay Ratliff. With all the secret rehab and no Peyton/Adrian results it appears goldbricking on a massive scale.

Next to cut bait on Miles Austin. Guy is either injured or a no show. Adios amigo.
In line after him is Demarco. If he changes his MO, then fine. Not likely though.

Richie, when you log on to AOL, does your computer make that modem noise ? Does your email say " You've GOT MAIL !! " ?
