WHITT'S END: 11.20.13

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End:

*Talked to a Cowboys' source last night and the topic got around to the offensive struggles. Me: "So, ya'll get it fixed during the bye week?" Source: "Yep." Me: "And ... ?" Source: "Get the ball to Dez." Me: "It's really that simple isn't it?" Source: "Yep." I'll be shocked Sunday in New York if Dez Bryant doesn't get 12+ touches. Deep balls. Quick hitches. Even a reverse. Or course it'll work, and the Cowboys will win. And afterward it'll be all palm-to-the-forehead-why-didn't-we-think-of-this-before? But some of us did. Right?

*As if you didn't know before, you do know: The Rangers' nucleus you thought would win a World Series has officially missed its window. With the news last night that free-agent David Murphy is leaving Texas for the Indians, the Rangers' foundation cracked a little more. In its prime, the hub of Murphy and Michael Young and Josh Hamilton and Nolan Ryan were one infamous non-catch in right field away. Now? They may win, but it won't be with the players that Jon Daniels initially envisioned when the whole rebuilding process began in 2007. Briefly did a radio show with Murphy on 105.3 The Fan in '11. Great guy. Bad loss. The Rangers may be a better team in 2014. But they won't have a better clubhouse.

*If the Cowboys are going to seriously threaten making the playoffs, one player above all others has to raise his game. Right now. Who that be? I give the answer over at NBC 5's Blue Star Blog.

*Brother, can you spare a dime Bitcoin? Wait, a what? A Bitcoin. Maybe I'm the last fool on my block to catch on to the craze, but to me Bitcoin sounds like a fake form of currency created by a fake person for use in a fake world. Like the form of "money" Neo would've used in The Matrix. Why does it sound like that? Because that's exactly what it is. Ready to be totally bewildered? Brush up on Bitcoin.

*I'm sure we'll boo Dwight Howard when his Rockets visit American Airlines Center tonight. After all, he did spurn the Mavs' recruiting last summer and sign with hated Houston. But the Mavs did okay for themselves. Monta Ellis is giving Dallas a totally different dimension on offense. And, don't look now, but turns out consolation center Samuel Dalembert has more than a little left in the tank. Mavs attempting to start 6-0 at home for the first time since the '08 season.

*I'm already tired of the JFK reflections and we're still two days away from the 50th anniversary. I think I hate it all because we - Dallas - get blamed for shooting Kennedy. But New York didn't kill John Lennon. And Washington, D.C. didn't kill Abraham Lincoln. Why did Dallas kill JFK?

WHITT'S END: 11.18.13

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End:

*This morning the Cowboys woke up for the first time this season without at least a share of first place in the NFC East. Still think they'll play in their third consecutive NFC East Championship Game, this year's version on Dec. 29 against the Eagles at AT&T Stadium. The Giants? I know they've won four in a row, but the string of quarterbacks they've faced? Josh Freeman (Vikings), Matt Barkley (Eagles), Terrelle Pryor (Raiders) and Scott Tolzien (Packers). Not convinced they're making some magical run.

*Mavs lost an entertaining, close game to the Heat Friday night, making it five straight losses to Miami since Game 6 of the NBA Finals. They'll also go at least 1,000 days between playoff-game wins since their title triumph on June 12, 2011.

*Yep, that familiar voice in an unfamiliar place Saturday afternoon was Mark Elfenbein on 103.3 FM ESPN. Nothing concrete or long-term yet, but my good friend Elf will start doing weekends, fill-ins and holidays. With previous tours at The Ticket and The Fan, he's now hit for the Metroplex radio cycle.

*The San Francisco Bat Kid will restore your hope in this cold, cruel world. Well done, 5-year-old cancer survivor Miles Scott. Bravo, Make-a-Wish. And kudos to the 13,000 "volunteers" who showed up to make that the best goose-bumpy moment of 2013.

*Was watching footballs college and pro over the weekend and had this thought: Why are there no black kickers? Before you spout off "Reggie Roby!", I'm talking kickers, place-kickers, the guys you don't see most of the game who then trot out and decide outcomes in the final seconds. Kickers. Couldn't name any. Not one. I was sure I was missing at least a couple. But, actually, there've only been four in the history of the NFL. Explanation, please?

WHITT'S END: 10.9.13

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End

*My best friend/co-worker/roommate in college was a full-blooded Choctaw. Political correctness wasn't chic in the '80s, but I asked him once if sports nicknames/mascots like "Redskins" were offensive to him and/or his family. "It's Hail to the Redskins," he quipped, "not Hell to the Redskins. Why would anyone take offense with that? I have major problems with the way we were robbed and discriminated against and banned to reservations. But a football named after our heritage? Nah. Bigger problems. Besides, that logo os pretty cool." Nonetheless, activist groups and now even President Obama are growing in tenor as they urge Washington to change the nickname of its NFL team. I've been to Redskins' games in D.C. and witnessed groups protesting the name outside the gates of the stadium. But it's usually 4-5 people. That number grows to 4,000-5,000 and the debate will gain legitimacy. I can't possibly know what it's like to be offended by a nickname mocking the color of my skin, so for now I'll rely upon my focus group of one and say owner Dan Snyder should remain firm in keeping it Redskins. Now, about the Hornets being 'dissed in favor of the Pelicans ...

*The post-Galloway era commences on 103.3 FM ESPN this afternoon at 3 with Matt Mosley driving the bus, temporarily flanked by Tim MacMahon and the guy they call "Stretch". It'll be a "soft open" and not a finished product. Still convinced it's only a matter of time until Dallas Morning News columnist Tim Cowlishaw joins Mosley as the permanent co-host. Without near as much fanfare as Galloway's farewell, Fitzsimmons & Durrett also did their final show on the station Monday afternoon. That was a short little 7-month run, wasn't it? Cumulus - which, remember, now runs 103.3 - apparently offered them the opportunity to keep the doing the show. But Durrett is returning to full-time writing at ESPNDallas.com and looks like Fitzsimmons is remaining in the 11 a.m.-3 p.m. time slot. Today he'll fly solo. For four hours. Yikes.

*Too Hot For Teacher: All Cristy Deweese ever wanted to be was a teacher. And, at 21, she is. Teaching Spanish at the Sorrells Magnet School in Dallas. By all accounts she's a good teacher that's liked by her students and commended by her supervisors. But Deweese might get fired. Because of two strikes against her: She's hot. And she works in the Bible Belt. While in college she was Co-Ed of the Month in Playboy. She hunts and she eats beef jerky and she's proud of her body. But Puritanical, ninny parents are taking a break from tearing out the pages about evolution in text books long enough to call for her firing. Yep, because of something totally legal she did at age 18, before she was hired. Ridiculous.

*When I'm wrong I'll admit it, and boy was I wrong about Will Allen. I loved his aggressiveness and the way he fearlessly stuck his nose in piles in run support. But the guy couldn't cover Michael Jackson in pass coverage, much less DeSean Jackson. Took horrible angles. And now? From starter to jobless in six weeks. Beaten out by a rookie, J.J. Wilcox. Swing and a miss by the Cowboys. And me.

*Update on the former "friend" who borrowed $6,500 from me in May and then conveniently quit taking my calls/responding to my texts. Sent him a certified demand letter through my attorney, and received zero response for 30 days. Means I'm all clear to this morning head down to my local Justice of the Peace and file a lawsuit in small claims court. If the guy doesn't show up to fight it I'll win a default judgment and within 4-6 weeks, or maybe months?, I'll be recouping most, if not all, of my loot. That's the plan anyway. The guy, by the way, is still running his profitable business in North Dallas. I guess he just thought I'd give up and go away. Guess that's why we're not really that good of friends. I'm horrible at just giving up and going away.

*Folks flippin' out over Jerry Jones' flip-phone? Yawn. We busted him on RAGE at training camp in 2011 when we noticed he had the same antiquated mobile device as, you guessed it, Greggo. During the interview he took a call on his flip-phone, notifying him that the Cowboys were losing the Nnamdi Asomugha Sweepstakes to the Eagles.

Cardinals 12, Cowboys 7: My Top 10 Whitty Observations

   10. Even if you were a Time Warner Cable refugee banished to watching the game on Telemundo 39, the Cowboys committed seis turnovers. Seven points. Six turnovers. Ugly, but not necessarily shocking. The Cowboys were minus-13 in turnover margin last season, 5th-worst in the NFL and a huge reason they finished 8-8. If Dallas doesn't protect the ball, everything else is meaningless. Here's betting Jason Garrett doesn't let his team spend a day at the beach before a regular-season game.

   9. DeVonte Holloman has already made more plays as a Cowboys' No. 57 than Victor Butler did. He's got two pre-season picks, and also had a sack/forced fumble negated by replay.

   8. Micah Pellerin's hit made me miss the good ol' days of contact football. Covering a punt he launched shoulder to helmet for a huge hit. Of course he was flagged. Might be fined. And I know, football is safer. But it ain't better.

   7. Speaking of big hits, did you see Miles Austin lower his head and deliver a blow after a second-quarter catch? Totally came out of nowhere. Has to be the hardest hit the receiver has ever produced.

   6. Visiting the Cowboys out in California during camp  were actress Kate Bosworth, Chris Paul and Yankees' manager Joe Girardi. But the guest with the biggest impact was Peter Berg. Who? He's he director of the upcoming movie "Lone Survivor", about a Navy SEAL mission gone wrong. A clip of the film had the team riveted.
