WHITT'S END: 11.8.13

Whether you're at the end of your coffee, your day, your week or even your rope, welcome to Whitt's End:

*Baylor's high-flying offense sputtered early, scoring only three points and  surrendering two on its first five drives. Baylor's Heisman Trophy candidate quarterback Bryce Petty completed only 13 passes all night. "It wasn't our cleanest game," said Petty. "We struggled to find our rhythm most of the night." Sounds like the Bears lost, right? Nope. They trounced a Top 10 Oklahoma team, 41-12. Okay, I'm impressed. And America should be too. Yes, Ahmad Dixon, God can save a Hooker. And Baylor can win the Big 12.

*Dwight Howard laughably boasts himself as "Superman." But did you see him last night? The Rockets' extremely mortal center was literally running scared from Lakers players, trying to avoid being intentionally fouled out of his fear of failure. Hack-a-Howard worked. He missed seven of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter of a one-point loss to his old Lakers team. Superman can leap over tall building. Howard can't even step over tiny puddles.

*Wait, there are serious concerns about Dez Bryant having a bulging disc in his back? You don't say!

*If Jonathan Martin needed evidence to support his claim that he was criminally harassed rather than being inherently soft, he got it last night in the form of Stanford 26, Oregon 20. Don't be misled by the final score skewed by a blocked field and an onside kick, this was a comprehensive mauling of the ballyhooed Duck Die-Nasty. The Cardinal played mean, nasty, tough football in keeping possession for 45 minutes and running the ball right down down the Ducks' bill most of the night. Martin, of course, played offensive lineman at Palo Alto.

*Speaking of Martin and hazing in the NFL, read this article about former tight end Cam Cleeland and the vision he lost being forced to run the Saints' training camp "gantlet" allowed by former coach Mike Ditka. There's nothing cool about being fake tough.

*I feel sorry for the family of slain former Cowboys' player Jerry Brown, but there's something wrong with hugging and forgiving Josh Brent while blaming - via lawsuit - the club in which Josh Brent got drunk enough to wreck his car and kill their son. You can fault Brent and the club, or just Brent himself. But no way you put all that responsibility solely on the club.

*Matthew 5:5 - Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the Earth. NFL 101: Yeah, but they won't play for the Dolphins.

   *Hot.

   *Not.

    1. FYI: Both the Talkers and Blitz lists are "picked" by the companies that put in the most advert dollars/have their employees (implicitly or explicitly) vote like they're voting for their own band in a Dallas Observer Music Award poll.

  2. The culture/ethos of the NFL is that "only the strong survive." The NFL locker room, is a place unlike any other to work. Making hazing against the rules won't stop it, much like hazing in College fraternities and sororities.

As far as The Rockets go, their main problem isn't Dwight Howard, who has an inexcusably low FT%. Their issue isn't even the bad lineups McHale throws out. Houston's Achilles heel is James Harden who was a putrid 9-24 last night. Their "best" player, who is horrendously inefficient, and a turnover machine. Harden makes OJ Mayo mistakes. At the end of last night's game, Jeremy Lin, who had 16 points off 8 shots, was trying to run the offense. Harden basically ignored him forcing Lin to take a bad "Hero/Harden-Ball" shot. As much as Dwight gets killed, Harden should get some of the blame. I suggest you watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-c9dClaPKgk&feature=youtu.be

  3. While I will agree hazing is wrong, I think Martin is handling it like a 16 year old schoolgirl.

    1. He's handling it the way he sees fit for him and his family. Since you don't know him, his state of mind, or what was done and said to him, you have no right to judge.

And I fully expect to be cussed at in reply, because as I seen in the past, that's your way of reacting when you don't like was been said about you or to you.

    2. I'm entitled to my own opinion, as are you.

While I guess you have a problem with what I post, I've never cussed at anyone here, called anyone names, etc.

From that standpoint, you've got the wrong Mohican, dawg.

    3. "Take a little boy and a little girl. A little boy falls down and the first thing we say as parents is ‘Get up, shake it off. You’ll be OK. Don’t cry.’ When a little girl falls down, what do we say? ‘It’s going to be OK.’ We validate their feelings. So right there from that moment, we’re teaching our men to mask their feelings, don't show their emotions. And it’s that times 100 with football players. You can’t show that you're hurt, you can’t show any pain. So for a guy to come into the locker room and he shows a little vulnerability, that’s a problem. That’s what I mean by the culture of the NFL. And that’s what we have to change."
      Brandon Marshall

West Coast Bill didn't put up with this shit. Nobody ought to. BS to it being the culture. It is sadistic crap that has no place in sports or any group. The Junction Boys days are over and never should have been,

  4. I'm with Rooster on this one. While I'm 100 lbs lighter than Incognito I sure as hell would not have taken that shit.

    1. You also would have gotten your ass kicked. Richie Incognito is INSANE, and if Jonathan Martin who as you have said is 100 lbs lighter, was intimidated by him what makes you think you would have a fighting chance? Martin is in a no win situation.

    2. There are ways to handle jerks without physical violence. Nobody intimidates you without your consent.

      Delete
    3. Such as? Because Martin went to Jeff Ireland, and was told to settle with violence.

    4. And therin lied his first mistake. He took his thin skin over to mommy to solve his problems, and mommy told him to act like a grown up and solve it himself.

How about talking a page out of the Dez Bryant playbook. When someone tells you to carry shoulder pads, do something you don't want, etc., you say "No."

I'm sure when Dez did that, he got a ration of shit from his teammates, but he didn't let it bother him, and it ended there.

Nobody can intimidate you without your consent. Nobody can bully you unless you're thin-skinned enough to give them the reaction they seek. If you give them a reaction, it fuels the fire.

For the love of god dude, did nobody teach you this in 1st grade?

    5. I have to disagree. If you're an outsider, you're an outsider. Racism which is the most extreme example of bullying, is done without consent of a people. BTW you haven't really given an actual solution, or alternative. You've simply alluded to Martin being a "momma's boy," and he just needs thicker skin.

  5. The point was I would not take it in the ass from anybody and quit the team.

  6. I can count the number of times on 1 hand I have heard Danny Balis on the radio bring up the fact that he owns the bar Twilight. I would need 1,000 hands to count the number of times Whitt has brought up Pizza Buzz on this blog.

Dude, we are here for your opinions on sports/life. We don't want your business being shoved down our throats! For the love of God, please stop!

  7. Hulk smash tall building.

Yes, the NFL ethos my be "only the tough survive" but these guys are supposed to be a) adults & b) professionals. Incognito would be fired & un-hirable in any other profession. He is worthless.

  8. You can kiss that TWTR money goodbye. Current valuation means earnings beat required for many, many moons moving forward. Unless you got in at the IPO price (which I'm betting your retail, so you didn't), it has some downward moves before it ever sees strong profit percentages.

    1. ^^Agreed! Wait and buy low if you HAVE to invest in Twitter. They haven't made a profit in the 5 years they have been around. "It's growing", they might say but until I can see the profitability to Twitter, I'll keep watching my Amazon stock go up.
